  • I'm looking to build up a nice commuter fixie, I think I've got a budget of about 1200 total and I'm budgeting 250 for the frame question is which one?

I liked the look of the 'cotic x' cyclocross frame but I think it might be little heavy at 4.5lbs frame only. or am I completely wrong?

  • You could get three or four 'nice commuter fixies' for 1200.

And there are several threads covering this subject.

Use the search facility at the top right of the window to find a whole wealth of info.

  • really? have you actually used the search on this site? I have. You get pages and pages of classified adds and not much else.

The most time I spend on a bike is the hour and a half a day spent commuting, seems reasonable to me to want to have a nice bike for that time spent. bikes are to be ridden after all.

  • Go advanced and remove the classifieds from the search.

    Search for OTP.

  • Thanks, I'd not used the advanced search bit before but I'm not really looking for an off the peg bike I want to build this myself. (not new to building bikes, just road bikes) will search for frames though

  • Look here:
    http://www.lfgss.com/thread527-2.html

The Cotic cyclocross frame is about the right weight for its design. Which is to be a durable multi use frame.

Have you looked at the singular peregrine?
    http://www.singularcycles.com/peregrine.html

or the All city nature boy?
    http://allcitycycles.com/bikes/nature_boy1/

    Both quite similar.

  • Check out the Traitor frames from Charlie the bike Monger.

  • Cyclocross bikes.

Save up and get a pureblood. Very sexy bike.

    Yes. Really.

I have used the search and it works pretty well, if you've got the first idea how to use any search such as google.

I think you'll find the tone of my post was pretty mild, and it's content was designed to help you.
If we all started a thread called 'what's the best fixie frame/racing frame/commuting frame' then the place would implode in about one hour.

You started just such a thread, but instead of flaming you like many others would have done I tried to help.

    So here's your advice.

    Get a fucking unipack.

  • The correct reply is 'no you're a cunt' I believe.

    ;)

  • steamroller

  • I think the steam roller is a little heavy too... thanks though it's definitely on the short list. I have to say I really like the 'All City Nature Boy' just a shame about the colour. The pureblood is just too rich for my taste nice though it is it's not twice as nice as the other's I've looked at, the peace maker is tempting though.

  • You seem overly concerned about the weight (especially when discussing steel frames)

If frame weight is a major factor and you are after steel then you may need to allocate more of the £1200 towards the frame. That wouldn't be abnormal as the ratio you are putting towards the frame is on the low side currently. Most people putting together a £1200 bike would spend more than £250 on the frame.

  • I think I may have got confused with the difference between a 1.6kg road frameset for the money I didn't expect cyclocross frames to be 2kg+ for just the frame. is 250 a typo? I'm happy to spend more than that, I'd budgeted 350 but looking at frames I think i need to consider spending more.

how much would be a normal ratio?

  • When you say commuting, I think of an on-one Pomp. Racks, mudguards, etc. Plus you'd save enough to get a set of carbon cd forks and a nice carbon seatpost to bring the weight down.

As smallfurry said the singular is nice. Sooooo versatile (just saw a wicked fully geared one pass me) altho I'd guess they're on the tubby side, especially with discs. Plus they require a sense of taste to build nicely.

When you tried riding the steamroller, did you notice the weight?

Or why not get a langster and upgrade it? It's alu.

Or get a secondhand condor pista and use race blades and a bag?

Or get one of those PX uber light aul road frame if theyre still around and pay for the dropouts to be modified (this could also be done with any decent 2nd hand frame)?

    Or utfb and utfs*

    *friendliest forum since 2007

  • I'd alway thought the rule is to spend as much on the frame and wheels as possible. Everything else is secondary and can be upgraded.

Cranks - those ~£100 SRAM ones would be fine
Bars/ stem - £50 you're going to want to change and try different setups
    Seatpost / chain / pedals etc - £70

So I guess budgeting something like £250 for non-frame and wheel parts leaves like a grand so Id spend £500 on a frame and £350 on wheels.

  • I think the steam roller is a little heavy too...

No, it's not a little heavy, it's just that you're a little weak.

This is coming from a bloke whose frame is heavier than a steamroller and can comfortably do centuries ride on.

£450 would be enough for reasonably decent part (mavic open pro with generic hubs, sram crankset, oversized bar/stem with sram brake hood levers, decent 28c marathon plus tyres, budget seatpost, decent saddle, decent headset like cane creek 40, etc.).

then £200-500 on frame, it's a singlespeed bicycle after all, it's pretty hard to spend £1200 on unless the frame cost slightly more than half that.

  • So basically your dick is bigger.

    Good to know.

Cyclo Cross frames do tend to be slightly heavier. However, do you think you will notice a 400g difference in frame weight. If you want a light single speed cross frame then Felt Breed, Kona Major One and the like are pretty light. I have owned both and they are both very nice handling, stiff frames. The Kona is the better of two and is superb to ride off road. The frame weight is around 1.5 kg and my total build is around 8.5kg. Most of the weight over a road bike is in the wheels and tyres and I could save around 1kg if changing to road wheels and tyres.
These are clearly modern Alu/Scandium frames that may not fit with what you are after.

  • It's a bit of an old man's bike but I like the Condor Tempo. Expensive - but I've seen a few aboput second hand

Actually re-reading your first post, it's pretty vague.

Do you mean you want a frame like the cotic x, and just want to know what else there is in this particular genre that would be lighter?

Or do you have particular requirements?

    • wheel size? (26", 700c, and tyre size/clearance needs please)
    • braze-on requirements?
    • brake? (discs, v-'s, calliper)
    • style? - fast (you talk about weight a lot), sharp handling, comfortable mile eater, semi-off-road, semi-pro-fixie?
    • frame material? - is steal a must?
  • steamroller

or Cross Check - versatile bike, single, fixed and geared, braze ons and big clearances.

  • **It's a bit of an old man's bike **but I like the Condor Tempo. Expensive - but I've seen a few aboput second hand

    fuck offf
