Rim with black machined braking surface

Posted on
  • Can't see anything when searching the forum or internet about this, wondering if anyone knows of a rim with a black machined braking surface? I want to run a front brake, but with the rim black all the way to the tire. It's just to keep the bike consistent across both wheels, rear will be black non machined.

  • the whole point of a machined braking surface is to take it back to the raw metal so you have something to brake on.

powder coat will fuck out, as would anodised rims eventually, i don't think its possible. unless your rims were cast iron.

  • Buy a carbon wheel.

Black Metal only exists as a genre of music.

  • Open Pro Ceramic. A tad more expensive than regular Open Pros and require ceramic specific brake pads but they will stay black (and offer better braking performance, which is their primary function)

  • They have been discontinued I'm afraid:-(

  • anything from mavic that says exalith in the marketing gubbins. hope you've got your £££ ready.

Less than a week in my experience

  • ...or fit a disc brake.

  • if you want the rim to be untouched, ride brakeless, buy a new fork and front hub and use a disc brake, or get over the aesthetics and live with the fact that machined rims, won't stay the same colour if they are being used.

No it isn't. It is to machine the rim surface to provide a better braking surface and has nothing to do with getting a raw metal surface.
An Open Pro CD has a machined braking surface yet it is not raw metal, as do other fully anodised rims. As others have said, the anodising does tend to wear off though although the CDs seem better than most.

  • raw metal, whatever. nitpicking

Not nitpicking at all, what you said was completely incorrect so thought it was worth correcting.

If you want a black alloy braking surface, this is the answer, otherwise Oz has the truth of it- carbon.

  • h + son sl42.

    tokyo fixed.

  • That's an alloy rim that has been anodized, which will be all one colour, at first, then the brake track colour will scrub off, and you will have a silver braking surface and a coloured rim.

Unless H+ Son have now licenced the ceramic technology from Mavic?

  • They have been discontinued I'm afraid:-(

Some shops still stock them. Best option yet! Or take one of these to your rim after each ride

  • Thanks for all the suggestions, the most realistic option seems a Mavic Open Pro CD then (assuming I can source it), or failing that the marker. Can't see any rim only versions of the Exalith technology on the Mavic site, shame as it looks very tasty!

  • The open pro CD is just a dark grey anodised version.

Open pro ceramic is the version that stays dark grey (or grey with silver patches when the coating cracks and falls off). It's good to brake on in the wet.

  • Check out the HED JET 6 BLACK carbon wheelsets , they have Black machined tracks on them!
They're comfortable, fast and surprisingly lighter than most full carbon wheelsets and obviously the breaking is far more superior that anodised rims.
I'm on the same boat at you right now for my 2015 black Bombtrack needle and the combination of the breakpads and rainy days have removed the anodised blackness off the rims and has made my bike look like Michael Ross's fixie from Suits 😒
Downside they're a bikes worth in price.

  • 6year old thread dredge, nice work.

  • Aside from this thread being 6 years old, they were asking for cheap black wheels for fixed gear. Not £1,600 carbon wheels with a black braking surface.

  • It may be of some use to future readers of the post in the same predicament, hence why the post still exists for people to read and comment on regardless of how old the post is.
Aside from that I read on the forum somewhere a few others have used a Black permenant Sharpie Magnum and it seems to work wonders as it's waterproof and gives a thin yet opaque finish on almost any material used on.
