I wonder if there'd be enough people interested in a ride that's not too far, at a steady pace, and non competitive, just purely for the enjoyment of cycling. No lycra either - for the sake of decency.
-
• #15
No lycra! burn the heretic!
-

we could hand out back packs full of rocks to the thin fast people to slow them down a bit then they can join in as well

I am fat old and unfit. I don't think that rides such as CM or Compass Beer rides would do anything to help my condition. What one needs is good long steady miles.
Long miles need lycra or else considerable discomfort will follow.
Nothing heroic just long and steady. .

What, you mean like the vast majority of group forum rides?

^rep for mythbusting

In! I am too unfit for more than 30 miles, so that discounts the majority of rides outside of london, but very interested in doing more miles.

Maybe somebody should organise a weekly or bi weekly ride of about 50 flat steady miles specifically designed to run near to as many train stations/drop-out points as possible. This means that those who want to go out for a steady ride and need to push themselves a little in terms of time riden rather than intensity are able to do so without fear of being stranded in the wilderness or biting off more than they can chew.
The key thing here is that those that want to lose weight and are worried about their fitness will inevitably be feeling far less fit than they actually are. If there was a regular environment where some of their worries are eased, people are more likely to relax into what they are doing.
Failling that, I guess peeps could just come on any old steady forum ride and turn back as and when they feel they have had enough without fear of embarassment. I've only been on half a dozen proper forum organised rides before and there have always been less fit and slightly larger participants and nobody has ever been left behind.

I'd say just try and get out and join some rides. Most have bail points at frequent parts. In March/April I was fretting if I'd be able to manage/keep up with the marathon ride...once you get out riding regularly and a bit further, you'd be amazed how your stamina/fitness/endure improves so quickly.
If you're worried about the pace, lycra brigade disappearing at 17mph into the distance, keep an eye on the ladies forum...I'm going to try and organise more predominantly ladies rides, but welcome to all who are happy to fall in with the pace/style of those rides. I'm thinking 30/40 mile-rs just something to get us all out on our bikes as much as poss over the winter, and hopefully improve/keep fitness levels up. Come Spring, TNRC won't know what's hit it ; )

^ anything more than 20 miles would seriously be stretching it for me. Not thinking outside of London, so probably low numbers of riders. Social ride so ending up at a pub no doubt. As there doesn't seem to be something like this already (apart from compass rides but this is for new/old/whatever) how many people would be interested?

Start a thread and see!
Are there any? I suppose critical mass is about the closest as the pace would obviously be slow (although it's a demo and not really a ride as such I guess) but it would be nice to be able to go out on a ride where one doesn't need to worry about keeping up or conking out halfway there.
