Normandy

  • I've just finished a cycling holiday to Normandy, cycling out to Portsmouth then taking the ferry to St Malo then riding to Arras. The trip was fabulous and I'd have to describe the Normandy region as something of a mecca for touring with beautiful countryside, good roads and boulangeries at regular intervals to prevent the blood sugar levels from getting too low. Particular highlight was the stretch between Fecamp and Dieppe (see Vélo route du Littoral - Seine-Maritime) where there's some marked out cycle routes which are just the right side of hilly when riding with a fully loaded touring bike.

The route from Abbeville to Arras was less successful with fairly monotonous roads across the Somme region and trucks passing by in rather close proximity

  • Sounds awesome. I'm hoping to get a weekend or two in North France before my not-yet-planned-but-will-happen Route des Grande Alpe tour next summer.

    Yes please!

  • Sounds/ looks great. Did you ride on a touring bike or track bike? I've wanted to do Normandy for a while now, maybe next summer if things go to plan.

  • That's an incredible picture.

    Good work!

I went with a geared bike (cyclo-cross with rear rack). Landscape is pretty undulating so touring would be far from easy if you were travelling without gears particularly if you had tent/sleeping bag.

  • Did you see the military grave sites ?
