when is this?
St Patricks Day is March 17th 2012
Sometime the guys run the bike fest one week before St. Patricks Day. This is the most accurate date I can give you right now as the date is not set for sure yet. I need the guys in Dublin to tell me when the're events are on. As soon as I know I will post here. Is that ok?

Yeah it is a tourney. It's 2 tourneys and a bike festival. Like I said, 1 tourney in Derry, 1 in Dublin. And like I also said, I am writing this to see what reception the tournament gets. It's early days yet lad. -

John H would like to measure the court and Rupert would like a surface sample.
Only then can London decide.

No problem. I have to go through the coucil to book a location first so when that is done I'll post it here. And the date depends on the Dublin guys also and the Portugese bike polo assoc who are having a tourney around the same tim, I have just been told

Once you have dates, confirmed, we'll make it a 'Tourney' and put the dates in the title.
Not trying to be a dick, just keeping things tidy.

Charcoes, great news that you're putting in the effort to get this together - well, done! I'm sure there are lots of folk on here who would be happy to share their tournament organising experience if you need it? And I'm sure you'll have a few folk from London who'll be up for this once it's all confirmed.

This could be amazing!
If I can I'm coming.

Sounds good. I'd say a few people from Belfast would be interested in this
Are their many polo players in Derry?

Are their many polo players in Derry?
I am the only hardcourt polo player in Derry. There are 1 or 2 grass polo players and there were 4 of us playing last year but not many people cycle here socially, mostly competitively and recreationally as there is a variety of cycle routes all over the North West, from 50k to 300k+. The aim of this tournament is to introduce bicycles to a city with little or no cycling culture. Although Derry has amazing facilities there is not a dense population here and thus there are not many cyclists, but it is starting to take off thanks to the cycling charity sustrans who are introducing cycling to children through a school programme teaching the safety basics e.t.c. and the da's cycling group for young fathers. Both groups are hoped to be present on the day of the event.
All the guys from Dublin will come though. Probably10 of them and me, and a couple from Belfast. All we need then is you guys.

Thank you. It would be great to get some advice. I've been in contact with the city of culture office and the woman in charge of city of culture 2013. If anybody could contact me on gilcreest.ciaran@gmail.com or facebook 'Ciaran Mac Giolla' that would be sweet.
Thanks man!

the 17th falls on a saturday next year so i presume the lads will organize the massacre on that weekend ie. 16th til 18th with the polo tournament happening on paddies day itself (17th). we are looking into accommodating foreign teams for the dublin part of this adventure, but we are a pretty small scene so unless if a good few of ye dont mind staying in a vacant house we 'acquired' access to from our house then don't expect too much free-accommodation-wise. sail and rail is cheap and bikes are free.
i will ask the lads and see what dates they are thinking this time round just to double check
This could be amazing!
this will be amazing : D

The court I am looking at currently is in the building process. If you look at page 15 and of the following pdf (derry regeneration) you will see number 3. This is the new public performance/ venue for Derry in the waterside of Derry. It is being built (80% finished) as part of an integration project fr the city of culture and is located by the river Foyle.
Anyway, the surface here would be granite blocks with 1cm gaps. But the shit is flush and smooth- the ball will run real good.
Looking at other places too.
And a wooden coult would be built. It all depends on how much funding I can get/ raise.

You wouldn't be the owner of a Paganini that I've seen locked up outside sandinos? If you're about next time I'm up I'll say hello

Yeah man that's my baby. If you're in derry we should meet up for a pint.
CANCELLED due to sponsorship withdrawal.
update
The sponsorship for a Derry polo tournament is being offerd for the month of June only, just to let you know. We'll have to see what happens with this. I was planning to leave derry in April after my final exams. hmmm. And very importantly the Dublin events are sure to be going ahead however the polo tourney will not be a formal one now. It will be throw ins and mess games with a lot of breakless fixed players playing ; Link; http://www.facebook.com/groups/290212634348964/?ref=ts
Nothing is definate yet. I am still in the funding application process but;
I am planning to organize a tournament for Derry City in March of this year. derry City has won the UK city of cuture award 2013 and much is being done to regenerate the place which has historically been a place of troubles and conflict. I plan on taking advantage of this opportunity to get funding for the bike polo tournament. i know what you're thinking, That is unlikely but just believe me when I say I will do everything in my power to make it happen.
During St Patricks weekend the lads in Dublin (polo and couriers alike) organize a bike festival. here is a vid for info on Dub bike culture and bike polo:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfX9ri0aqfA
The idea is that we get a tourney here( http://maps.google.com/ ) in Derry on the days preceeding the bike festival events in Dublin. I intend to organize a bus to drive from Derry to Dublin.
With regards to transport to the mainland sail and rail within the uk is pretty decent while there is also an airport in Derry city that flies direct. The flight takes 30 minutes and and flights cost in or around £30-£40, which is reasonable enough I guess. London to Belfast by ferry is £44 each way and handier for bikes, plus there is loads of cultural stuff to see in Belfast and I think there's a few lads who play polo? Anybody? You would then travel to derry at a small cost by train. Although Derry is a city it's more like a large town and the people here are sound, although they think cycling socially is a bit wierd!!!! (we will change this perception I hope)
Anyway, this is just some broad info. i guess i really just want to see if anybody is interested?
I'll keep this topic updated.
Peace and polo!
