  • "The annual BFF alleycat race is almost here again.8th October,4pm Silk St. Barbican, £4 to enter.A point to point race involving 5 checkpoints,it isn't as short as it sounds, with a brand new track frame going to the winner.Lots of other good prizes too.I'll be trying to make this a fair race so non-couriers will get a helping hand!
You should all have recovered from London's Calling by the time this comes around...." (Moving Target)

    Who's done for this cat?

  • If I can get out of work early enough, hell yeah! I figure the more alleycats I enter, the faster I'll get and one day, one day I might finish one ; )

  • This does sound like one which should be finishable, just keep on following, it are just 5 checkpoints.

  • Hey everybody! I am Italian but I am staying in Southampton for a Master in Ocean Science. In Italy I race a lot in alleycats but I bet they are not comparable to the ones here in UK. Anyways I have seen that there will be this race during the BFF so I thought that I might participate.
How much will it cost to bring the bike on the train? Where can I buy a good map of the city?
I hope I can see you soon!

  • hi Cigolio - good maps at any book shop called they' are called "a to z" but if you're fast you should just rock up follow someone good (ask around to see who people think is good) then just beat him in the sprint... thats how the "out of towners" do it. :)

Bikes on the overground are free so what ever your train cost is the cost :)

    What are we talking here...amputation?

  • I wish there was a track frame for the winner @ bff vienna...

    Good luck!

Bless you but I don't think it's the route/alleycat that is the problem.

Following a Team DFL tactic talk/acrimonious split at the Flask on Tuesday I decided to follow suit with trying to ride everywhere like I'm in an alleycat. So on my way home from Guides I fairly bombed it down Green Lanes, pulling off a fairly impressive almost couple of HSW for someone of my speed and age and general shitness. Was really pleased with myself until I realised I'd totally missed the turning for my road :faceplonk:

So, Jacqui, are you fast? Of course my initial idea is to follow the favorites...that's the way it goes in Italy as well. But I am not sure I can keep the pace of a real messenger, so the map becomes useful when I will be alone ;-)
I hope I will see you all there!

  • Just watch out for the decoys! Paid in Red stripe by other couriers to set off fast....in the wrong direction, to confuse the out of towners. ;]

That's cool I just moved to London a bit more than two weeks ago. The traffic is different, but if you follow somebody you'll be able to copy their lines in traffic. Don't expect to know the streets, nevertheless get yourself an A-Z booklet, in case you get completely lost and just want to return to the BFF.

  • Not always a great idea to copy someones lines in traffic...just because they find a gap it doesn't mean it'll be there long enough for you to get through it too.

  • the problem is not the traffic, but the directions

  • I might be interested in this.
Just to make a fool out of myself quitting after the 2nd checkpoint having a smoke instead.

    (half-arsed in)

  • Nice one

Do it! I'm only wavering because I don't really want to sit around in sweaty clothes for the film action and not sure if I'll have time to ride, go home, get ready, come out again...NB I can't ride/race for shit, but love having a go...and hey, maybe I'll get to a checkpoint before the people manning it, leave, one of these days...!

  • Just take an extra shirt in your bag. Gotta use those messenger bags for something ;-)

It'll take more than an extra shirt for me to look anywhere near fresh after an alleycat!

    You deffo in Daniel?

  • You will need an A-Z map book for this.
