Quick release on track

  • I realise this is a massive no no.

Is it still a problem with a non quick release skewer in there?

ie; is the problem with the thinness of the skewer opposed to a traditional track axle or because it is quick release?

    Thanks

  • No problem on the front if its an allen key skewer, Im nearly 100% sure its track legal. The thickness of the skewer doesnt matter so much as the axle doesnt need much extra tension to hold it in place

  • Awesome. Thanks for the advice. I have a road hub built on to the front wheel with an allen skewer, guess maybe that's what I should've said in the first place but you answered my question anyhow.

  • allen skewer is fine.

the Mavic iO is held in place with allen bolts that are only slightly thicker...

  • I use allen bolts front and back on the track

I want to run a 120mm spaced track hub with a QR (on/off road and obviously not on the track). I'll be using a closed-cam campag style quick release so I'm pretty sure it'll hold riding singlespeed. My issue is getting hold of a suitable hub.

Is this overpriced new Surly hub my only option?

  • the On One/planet x track hubs have hollow axles, the one with the cutouts in the flanges, same basic model from All City. I use one for my turbo trainer with a quick release

Miche can have the axles switched to hollow, the bearings rest on a threaded bearing shaft/sleeve which will fit a standard 10mm hollow axle

Suzue pro max sb can be fitted with a hollow 10mm axle but you would need to buy the Surly threaded bearing shaft from Jensonusa, miche dont sell theres seperate. or use Suzue with a hollow 9.5mm 26tpi axle and its own parts

Would this clamp down enough to the width of a dropout/track-end?

  • I used an old steel quick release skewer that would have been for 5/6/7speed 120-126mm dropouts. more modern skewers might not have enough threads for 120mm, Im not 100% sure

  • I guess I could cut down the axle if needed. I'm going to get my hands on one and have a play.

    Cheers for the above info.
