Wanted: Child's seat - front/centre mounted.

Posted on
  • Hi,
Am after a child's seat for my 10 month old daughter. Have no experience of them so am open to suggestions but I think the style that mount up front between your arms would be best personally. If anyone has anything, please give me a shout.
    Cheers,
    Dan.

  • We recently reviewed child seats for Southwark Cyclists' newsletter - hope this helps:

Many recommend seats that go in front of the rider, because that way the child can be part of the ride rather than just a passive passenger on the back.

I bought the Weeride Kangaroo, which looked tiny when it came out of the box, but actually my 2-year old found it quite comfortable. During the ride the balance was much better than with a seat on the back and I was able to transport things since the rack was free for my panniers. The cons were that the heavy bar on which the seat was mounted was hard to take off when my son wasn't riding with me, and not easily done in a hurry. While riding my knees kept knocking the seat, but the final straw was that since I had changed the handlebar on my bike the Weerides' headrest blocked my steering, so I could only really go straight ahead! So back to the shop it went.

At the Urban Greenfair, in Brockwell Park, I had the chance to try out a few other child bike seats. I tried the Hamax Kiss, which I found too flimsy and it came with a weighty block that would be mounted on your bike permanently.

The other seat we tested was the Co-Pilot Limo, which my son enjoyed a lot, so that was the next seat I got from Tredz.com. After a few months using it the pros are that it's comfy for my son, he still likes it. It comes with a sturdy Blackburn rack, which replaced my old one, so no additional weight was added to my bike and the seat reclines, so my son can sleep when he is tired. Cons: I can't use panniers when the seat is mounted on the rack and having a a two-year old on the rack isn't the greatest weight distribution. Unfortunately the plastic mould of our our particular seat is slightly bent, so the safety bar doesn't fit quite right and my son can open it himself. I contacted Tredz and sent them photos of it, so far they are slow to respond, but generally I can strongly recommend the seat.

    Weeride Kangaroo, approx £70
    Hamax Kiss, approx £45
    Co-Pilot Limo, approx £85
