Assessing rim wear

Posted on
  • I've done a bit of searching around and it seems it's difficult to assess how much life is left in a rim without some kind of measuring caliper. However I'm hoping someone with a bit of experience with Open Pros can give me their assessment.

Appreciate the pic isn't great, but it shows the concave wear pattern. Rim has about 3000 miles on it, all weather. This is a front, wear to rear looks similar.

    What do you think?

    Cheers in advance :)

  • Hmmm, if the gap is around 0.5mm, still OK for a bit, up at 0.8mm, rim is toast, 1mm = deathtrap, discard immediately.

This advice is worth what you paid for it, but it looks OK for a bit to me.....

  • I have it on good authority that these rims are in "good used condition, thousands of miles left":

  • I am thinking of swapping my front and rear open pros to get a more life out of them. I ride a front brake only.

    Mavic tech manual quote:

    For rims not fitted with a wear indicator, check using a depth gauge that the maximum wear on each side is not more than 0.4 mm;

  • Thanks all -

@Scherrit - thanks for taking the time to reply.

@Dammit - it was that photo that made me wonder what mine were like and how much longer they had to live. Your loss was my wake up call, if that's any consolation.

@pipwish - I'd read through the CTC forum link but thanks for posting it. Thanks also for following up with the Mavic tech doc quote - I assume the lawyers have had some input there so you'd probably be able to push it a bit further than .4mm but safety is obviously paramount.

Looks like I've got a few thousand left on these but will be checking them regularly. Cheers.

  • A few months ago I started to get a strange rasping noise while operating my brake. changed blocks, cleaded rim with MEK, but still there. then noticed the surface was a bit pitted. new rim - prob solved!

can't help worrying how close to collapse I was though!

I rode a set of 90s mtb rims till they were like that. Got a pinch puncture when I was out on a group ride one day, a guy advised I should stick a bunch extra pressure in there to avoid another pinch flat.
Rim exploded and I'm lucky to still have eyes! impressive bits of rim separated from the rest of the wheel, and I was walking.

    Thousands of miles brakeless, maybe

  • Plenty of life left in them, my bmx rims had over twice that before they let go, in quite a good way to, I skided round a corner let the brake off but the wheel stayed locked up and nearly spat me off. So I did the usual and assumed the pad was caught on the tyre then cut my finger on the bit of rim that was sticking out :/. IMO I wouldn't let it get above 0.75mm

  • Well, the bikes all ready to go for a ride tomorrow with (kind of) those wheels on:

  • You lot aren't trying hard enough.. front and rear Open Pro.. still with a bit of life in them..

  • Howard, in summary.

    1) Your rims look to be ok for a bit longer as far as you can tell from the photo.
    2) Dammit hasn't let go yet
    3) Hippy has balls the size of cantaloupes.

Definitely at least 4 months of life in them.

  • hippy should wear eye protection when inflating those bad boys :p
