What to look for in a mobile contract

I've managed to kill my phone (again) due to an unscheduled trip in the canal (again). My current contract is 8.50 for 100 min, 100 texts (of which I only really use the minutes). While shopping for a new handset, it seems to me that for about the cost I could get a free phone with a 10.50 contract and get all kinds of other stuff (like download megabites and stuff) but for the life of my I don't know whether that's particularly useful and what to get from the phone.
Possibly I'll just chuck it all in and go pay-as-you-go.

I pay £10 a month on o2 and get unlimted texts and internet for a whole month and that's pay as you go

I'm pay as you going on giff gaff, seems pretty cheap to me.
