The steel axle connected to the crank.
Are there flats which will accept a 15mm wrench?
Is there a hole on the other side which accepts an allen wrench?

Remember that the drive side pedal unscrews anti clockwise and the non drive side unscrews clockwise.

Yer theres an allen hole on the other side, I guess I unscrew that and use a wrench on the silver part attached to the crank?

as seen from the pedal side of the crank- if you're using an allen key from the back side of the crank, and you are working from the other side of the bike, it's all rather confusing.

The way I found it easiest to remember was that you screw the pedals on by turning them towards the front of the bike, and unscrew them towards the back.

15mm pedal spanner OR 5/6mm good quality allen key.
IF they have been on a while, worth soaking in WD40/plusgas for 24hrs before attempting.I have a monster pedal spanner and often mates borrow it for seized pedals. Tried it on a set of cranks the other day, truv hozfellas (the meaty DH ones) which have stainless inserts. Yeah so the inserts came out, pedal still attached WTF!!? Inserts are typically reverse threaded to avoid that, apparently not this set though. Epic Failz.

Yer took it to a friends house who tried with a wrench, even using a hammer to hit the wrench couldnt get them undone. Took it to halfords, used one of those special tools for it + 2 guys hanging off it before it came undone.

I have maybe the best wrench you can get for stubborn pedals, a 2ft 1/2 inch strong arm for the allen keys. A scaffold bar and decent spanner work wonders on the outside flats if you have any scaffold bar knocking about

most likely you over-tightened it when you first try to undo it by going the wrong way.

^ Did this last weekend. Felt a complete lemon taking it to Push and getting them to get them off for me.
Cheers Dommyracer for the advice! -

Those Shimano pedals will accept 6mm allen wrench on the hind-side, and a standard 15mm wrench. If you've left the pedals alone (ie. never serviced) bet you'll have a tough time with the allen wrench due to lack of torque on a 6mm wrench.
Best option is pedal wrench, but use care not to accidentally fiddle with the lock-nut.
I'm trying to replace the pedals on my Allez, below is an image of the pedal:
What do I need to unscrew to get the pedals off?
