Modifying teeth profile and hand polishing cogs?

Posted on
  • Theres not much info online apart from a mention at businesscycles, eai superstar and gold medal pro have special handwork done on them to improve the tooth profile, does anyone have any info on the best shape to use(apart from buying one for reference)?
I wont be able to nickel plate but the mirror polish is achievable.

Ive been working on a 14T made by Maeda industries, its pre NJS so has BIA stamp. The color before was a dark grey rather than black like most heat treated steel track cogs, the shape of the teeth is not like Shimano,Suntour or anything else Ive had. The teeth points are much smaller/'pointier'

Ive finished the hand filing and polishing and Im hoping to try it out this week but hesitant I might have fuked it up. Ive smoothed down near the top of the teeth and gotten rid of the sharp angle that most cogs have. The cog had little wear to begin with but did show signs of use with uniform wear all round, Id like to use if for racing this week but might just buy a Dura Ace 14t at my LBS on race day. Anyone here have experience with modifying cogs? Is there much difference between Dura Ace and EAI Superstar as far as performance or is it milliseconds and drivechain sound?

  • I hand polished my DA 14 tooth.
    Makes fuck all noticeable difference.

  • Theres not much info online apart from a mention...

    why?

  • Who wants to polish my cogs?

  • Ye difference is probably unrecordable, maybe placebo effect. Its all about the mind in a sprint anyway.

  • What?

    why?

  • the whole thing.
    Why?

  • To go faster! Better chain engagement and less drag/friction with the sideplates

  • i only did mine out of boredom at work.
i have no idea why you would want to do it in your own free time.

    Umm, No.

  • Do it, it looks ace.

Do some training, eat less pies... you'll go faster. Polishing a cog is pointless.

Infact shaving legs or pumping your tyres hard your would give you more advantage than polishing a cog.

  • As will pumping up your legs and shaving your tyres
