Wheels for Wellbeing had a break-in!

  • For those of you that don't know, Wheels for Wellbeing (WfW) are a charity that support disabled people to cycle. We run sessions in Croydon (at the Sports Arena) and in Lambeth (at Brockwell Park, Brixton) and on Sunday at approx 5.30pm, our storage facility in Brockwell Park was broken into.
6 people were caught in the act and were arrested on the spot. We found out today that they have been released with a caution, after being held for 24 hours.
The local police have been great and even gave the perpetrators a lesson in what we do - apparently they had no idea that the building was used by us and now feel suitably guilty! Their parents are equally annoyed with them and I'm sure they will be dishing out their own form of punishment.
Fortunately, they were caught before they could take any of the bikes, so nothing was stolen (apart from 2 t-shirts that were left over from a Bike Polo event on July 3 last year - very odd that the incident occoured on the same date a year later! 2 of the perpetrators even had their mug-shots taken wearing them!).
There was some damage to the building (glass in a skylight broken and wire mesh bent back as well as a sliding door to where the cycles were stored was ripped of the rails (although the padlock remained attached to both the door and the concrete wall) which the Park Manager is currently trying to get fixed.
Just thought I'd let you know as I know LFGSS support the work of WfW.

  • And to think they're considering getting rid of the Park Rangers...

  • glad they didn't get anything.

if anyone has never heard of WfW before, you might like to know that edscoble and stonehedge are cycling to the lake district over 3 days (this week i think), with all sponsorship going to the charity

    Setting off tomorrow morning Si.

The route has grown to 360mi over three days but we've managed to cut out a few of the killer hills. Still pretty hilly around the peaks and the lakes though!

Glad you didn't lose anything major Heather!
