Charge Juicer - a litany of disasters....

Posted on
  • I bought a charge juicer hi on the cycle 2 work scheme a few months back and have had nothing but problems with it. To date I have had a snapped gear cable, snapped brake cable, broken spokes, a derailleur that wasn't shifting gears properly, a bent front wheel and now a rear mudguard that keeps coming loose despite repeated efforts at tightening the screw that holds it in place (the mudguard basically stays taught for about 5 minutes before coming loose again).

Has anyone else had issues with the juicer? I'd chuck it on the scrapheap if I hadn't invested so much money in the thing already....

  • Take it back to the shop you bought it from, and get them to fix it.

  • Mudguard: you may have fuxed the eyelet theads. Use some thread glue, or a longer bolt with a nut. Mudguards are fiddly, but worth getting right.

Off the shelf wheels are not as well made as custom. Ask the retailer very nicely if they could give you a good deal on rebuilding them. Or get in touch with Charge and ask them to sort the wheels out.

Cables can snap. If a coulple of strands were snipped in the wrong place when trimming that can lead to problems.

  • Thanks for the tips.

I'm not sure I can use a long bolt on that part of the mudguard, as its on the bit that sits just below the rear brake. Will a new eyelet do the trick?

  • if its anything like the setup on the Charge Plug Grinder, the mudguard coming loose seems a common problem.

I fixed it on mine by coating the bolt in Loctite 243, but 245 should work too. 243 should only be used if the bolt has a hex head.

http://www.loctite.co.uk/cps/rde/xchg/henkel_uke/hs.xsl/fullproduct-list-loctite-4995.htm is a list of the loctite products. Most local DIY/tool shops should have it in, also car places, but maybe not Homebase etc.

  • take it back dude. Warranty for the win.

  • ^ This.

Regardless of what can go wrong with a bike over time you say you bought this a few months back. Everything on that bike is covered for 12 months minimum I would have thought (check your warranty), wheels, cables, mudguards, you name it. Charge and the bike shop have a legal obligation to ensure everything works exactly as it should. Take it back to the shop and get everything done under warranty, whether the shop decide to send it back to Charge or not is entirely up to them and not really your concern as long as it's sorted.

  • Thanks. Problem is, I've already forked out the cash to fix the gear/brake cable and the broken spokes meant I needed to buy a new wheel. Nonetheless, I've booked a free service for tomorrow, so hopefully that should prevent any further issues.

How many spokes did you break?

Sounds like either we don't have the full story or you're getting taken for a ride.

  • ^ I fear the latter.

  • It was Evans Wimbledon, wasn't it?
