hey man - has the frame been in a crash or is just a bit of hydraulic action?
if you look inside the headtube is there a crack in the metal? I'm not on about the brushed metal outside....

Never crashed. A familiar Alan issue apparently.
I'll have to check it over, but the frame isn't at my place at the moment. As soon as I'm able I'll let you know.

£110 for a cracked frame?
-
• #14
The crack is not in the tubing, where it would be terminal. It's in the lugging, where it can be repaired. I've taken advice on how much I should ask for it considering the crack, and priced it accordingly. I can only see if there's any interest, having clearly stated the issue with it.

Sad to see this one being put down for obvious reasons, but like many things there is a solution.

If they can repair carbon fibre and give warrenty on that than this solution isn't is at least something to try certainly while reading the testimonials.

I didn't know you had an Alan! They're great bikes - yours really looks lovely.
Just checked mine, it doesn't have a crack - could be because it is much smaller frame though.

Cracked lug = broken frame, regardless of how you describe it. Yes they can be repaired, by either replacing the lug (if you can find one) or getting it welded - will require post-welding machining too. JB Weld would be absolutely useless.

^^Who hasn't got an Alan? Bloody common as muck round here it seems.

Perhaps Monty. It's up here on display with the crack, which I have been told needn't be terminal. By showing it though I am inviting alternative comments. I'm not trying to describe it in any other way than as it is. If it turns out to be a dud, then I'll have to swallow the loss.

The frame is an early 1980s Super, with pantographed forkcrown, headlugs and cut-out lugging elsewhere. However, there is a crack, shown, in the headtube lugs. I am not selling it for this reason, as it was only discovered when the bike was stripped. I've ridden the frame for about 6 months, but there's no saying for how long with the crack. I really don't know. I'm selling it to fund another frame.
I have it on good authority that this is unfortunately a common occurrence with Alan's, and that it is repairable. If I wanted to keep it I'd do so, but I want to buy something else. It really is beautiful, and much more desirable than the silver frames in my opinion. There is a decal missing on the non-driveside top-tube, and some scuffing as you'd expect, but otherwise it's in very good condition. It has an Italian threaded Shimano BB which worked loose twice under nothing more strenuous than commuting, so it's been secured with Loctite. One of the cups has been replaced with a Campag, but I still have the original.
ST - c-t-t = 58cm.
TT - c-t-c = 54 1/2/55 cm.
126/100 spacing.
£110.

I also have a 25mm seatpost which suits the era of the frame. It's got a hole drilled in it, pictured, which is how it was when I bought it. I've no idea why. I'll chuck that in for nothing with the frame if somebody would like it, otherwise;
£15.

I also have this saddle. There's a minor scuff on the left-rear, shown; otherwise it's in good shape.
£20.
If somebody wants both the saddle and seatpost then I'd do them for £30, but any buyer of the frame would have first refusal on the seatpost.
Dibs on the thread followed by a PM please, and preference given to London buyers.
Cheers,
'swine.
