  • i need some bottom bracket advice

my bearing shattered on my bottom bracket which is an old style raleigh bb lose bearings type like this http://www.freemanscycles.co.uk/bicycle-parts/bottom-brackets/raleigh-bottom-bracket-set.html

i wanted to upgrade it to a nice new sealed bb my shell is 68mm but the old spindle is 140 mm would a 68mm x 110 bb fit or should i opt for the 126 ?? i was also goig to buy a new chain set as the old one was a cottered double chainring im using the inside 39t chainring at preset which seems to give a nice chain line its just clearance/chain line issues im worried about =S

    thanks

  • The length of the BB spindle depends on your cranks. So buy the cranks then get the BB. Or buy them both at the same time. Theres a fair few listings on the internet showing which length BB for each crankset.

A singlespeed crank is going to look nicer but an mtb crank would also work .

  • You probably know this, but older Raleigh bikes can have non-standard Raleigh threads on the headset and bottom bracket. So the first step for anyone wanting to fit a sealed BB to an old Raleigh bike is to beg, borrow or steal a sealed BB to see if it screws in before sprurging money on a new one. As usual, Sheldon has the low-down http://www.sheldonbrown.com/gloss_bo-z.html#bottom.
