S &S Machine couplers

  • I was thinking about retrofitting those.

Firstly, does it make sense with a titanium frame?
Secondly, where would be the best place to go to have the fitted (cheapest, but reliable and which works with ti)?

Anybody has a frame with BTC couplers?

ps. merge if necessary, but I haven't found anything through a regular UTFS procedure.

    Where can I buy them?

[*]Consumers should purchase complete bikes, frames manufactured with BTCs™** and accessory items from a local retailer. If your retailer doesn't carry bicycles with BTCs™ and is unable to work with a listed framebuilder, we suggest you contact a framebuilder to locate a retailer in your area. In areas where a framebuilder isn't represented, they may sell to you direct, but there is usually no price advantage. Some framebuilders don't sell through retailers, they only sell direct to consumers. For information regarding whether a framebuilder sells direct or through retailers, see the builder profile for each framebuilder which can be found by clicking on the framebuilder's name on the **framebuilder lists..
[*]Retrofitting BTCs™** to your existing frame** can be arranged through a retailer but it is more commonly done by going direct to a** framebuilder.
    [*]
BTCs are sold only to professional bicycle framebuilders. **We're sorry but couplings are not sold to amateur framebuilders.
[*]S and S Machine does not sell bikes or retrofit bikes, we only make the couplings which we sell to professional bicycle framebuilders.

Nuknow was asking about them a day or two ago, might be worth asking if he found out anything interesting.

If its doable I'd look in the framebuilders/titanium threads to see who can.

  • Try Vernon Barker - if he can't do them then probably no one can.

  • Not sure if there's anything useful to be sucked from these..

That actually gave me another idea - to fit a small one on the seatstay as well and get a belt drive.

  • I think I will give Roberts a call first.

  • I now has...
Quite the disassembly required, will have to work on packing arrangements I think...

  • Great, Henners. Hope you have fun.

  • I did indeed. Now all packed up and coming home.
They're a beautiful piece of machining.

  • Quite tempt to get an ultralight road bike made with S&S coupling.

Obviously a real job and paying off the custom bike come first.

  • That would be nice.

It's beyond my means at the moment :-/

    That.is.soo.cool.

  • I've had couplers on my bike for a few years and didn't use them for a while but had a few trips with them this year. My bike is 65cm so it involves quite a bit of disassembly to get it to fit and fiddling about but overall I love it. The box is so much easier to lug around airports etc and not been charged for it yet.

I've got it down to between 30 to 45mins for assembly/disassembly which isn't too bad. Make sure you take a series of photos of taking each part out and just follow that in reverse to re pack the next time.

  • Yeah, I've got them on a Ti frame. They make sense since the Ti is light, the additional weight is minimal (checkout the S&S website, there's a calc to work out the weight increase.) In use, there's no noticeable effect on the handling or flex of the frame, whatsoever. The only thing to watch out for it being very careful with the spanner. Ti is soft and you could scuff the couplings if you slip.
As for a retrofit, I would give Jim at Omega a call. He might be able to help. The good news is you won't need a respray afterwards. Good luck.

  • Few TSA mishaps, but 45 mins of rebuilding and it rides just as beautifully.

  • I really want to build a full size fixed/ss ti frame for 20" wheels to replace the folder. I'd need need couplers for it to make sense. Nice to know people fit them to titanium tubing. I might rehash the whole idea.

  • Get old Raleigh Twenty, strip it down and rebuild it with light component and coaster hubs, job done.
