Bikeaway lockers?

Posted on
  • So our building are looking at putting in some bike lockers outside, by these guys:

    http://www.bikeaway.com/

Anyone heard of them ? I googled and see that they installed some on the frampton estate in hackney a few years back. Didn't hear if they survived over the years.

My main concern is it says "Hey, the bikes are in here, please cut open and steal". However, the steel is reasonable thickness, so cutting into them would not be subtle. They do both 1.55mm and 2.0mm steel. Still I am skeptical, and think that I should just keep hauling my bike upstairs.

  • We have a few of these kicking about town...

A few have broken locks and look a bit banged up.. but I'd say this is more down to lack of maintenance or regular checks on them rather than a design fail.

If they're put somewhere visible, I think they'd be ok.

  • We have some at a local park and ride site. The downside I find is that on these particular ones you provide your own padlock, so people leave them locked up all the time even when they have removed their bike (so that its free for them the following day), consequently there are never any vacant

It would be good if there was something to lock your bike to inside the cubicle (belt & braces style)

  • So ours would have locks already it seems, as they want 30quid deposit for a key. I'm tempted to just say sure and use it as storage for other junk :)

  • I can imagine the look of surprise on the bike thief's face when he breaks it open and finds it stacked floor to ceiling with your midget porn collection.

  • We've got these at work, be warned if your mudguards come round too far they will get very scraped and bumped.

grumps about the state of his Plug's mudguards

  • My missus is on at me to get my road bike out of the flat... so considering renting a bikeaway locker around the corner. It's slap bang in the middle of an estate though...

Wonder if bike insurers would cover the locker at no extra cost...

  • i've got one if you have any questions. i think they are pretty good and you can use your own badass padlock for extra security...

  • I have one of these on our estate and it has kept my bike safe for 4 years without incident. The caretaker on the estate told me it took the Met several hours to cut their way into one lookng for contraband a while ago - so some indication of the rigid construction.
