  • I've been out of the country the last couple weeks thus the delay in getting this post up.

I was leaving the Handsome Furs gig at The Lexington a couple weeks ago (Monday the 16th) and unlocked me and my girl's bikes from the bike stand (second or third from Pentonville Road on Penton Street). A single-speed conversion fell over that wasn't locked to the other side of the stand. A small cable lock was around the bike stand near the front wheel but not attached to the bike, so it is possible the owner didn't lock it properly. I didn't want to leave it there as some unsavory characters took quick notice when a friend we went to the gig with shrieked "it isn't EVEN LOCKED!"

So I took the bike into the Lexington and held it aloft walking around shouting "who's bike is this?!" Nobody. Walked around and asked people... No dice. Told the barstaff and security the deal and they let me stash it behind the ticket counter near the entrance where I put a note on it. Went back outside and waited around for a bit for somebody to show. Nobody came so we headed home.

Called The Lexington the next day and nobody had claimed the bike, the bar told me they had a sold out show that night and I needed to come in and move the bike. Went back up there about 6:30 or 7pm and collected the bike. Put a flyer up on the bike stand and on the wall outside the Lexington where I found it. Rode the bike home.

The next morning I was out of the country for a couple weeks. I'm back now, I don't have any phone messages and no news from the staff at The Lexington.

Seeing if ya'll might be able to help track down the owner.

If it is yours PM me with a description or photos.

    Thanks.

  • it's ed's.

  • Ed who? Put him in touch.

  • Ed who? Put him in touch.

sorry, crap joke. i don't know who it belongs to.

ignore the nay-sayers. sounds like you did all you could and went above and beyond the call of duty. if it was me i might have shouted in the door of the pub and then just left it there.

  • I think you did the right thing.

Good luck on finding the owner.

  • Sorry OmarLittle, I think you missed the point. Looking for help finding the owner not your opinions about me. So unless you have something helpful to add, kindly GTFO.

  • definitely did the right thing, and hopefully the owner will be found

  • Update: Rode by the Lexington and my posters are not there any longer, going to print out a few new ones and put them up again and will see about putting them up in the Lexington and businesses nearby.

Also posted a message on Gumtree Lost & Found.

Anybody have any other forums they can suggest in case this person isn't a LFGSS user?

  • I also think you did the right thing.

Have you looked through the stolen bikes thread? Might be some posts after the date you found it...

  • Definitely did the right thing. Good luck finding the owner.

  • I think you did the right thing. Have you thought about contacting the local poice station? If it was reported stolen then they should have the owner's details.

  • Not wanting to cloud your good intentions but sorry, I think you gone done wrong! If you where going out the country for a couple of weeks you should have just left the bike where it was. There is no saying that the owner went to that particular venue. If they came back from where they had been after closing time they would have likely presumed it stolen and maybe did not have time to come back day after day to try find it. Bad moves as you basically stole it without stealing it....

    is this a wind up?

I think you did the right thing.

Good luck on finding the owner.

    ^ this

  • ^^ also this

That was the first thing I did. No hits.

  • clearly did the right thing. and it sounds like you have also gone above and beyond to try and get hold of the owner already. good luck!

  • Another update– called the local police station (Islington branch 02074210238) but nobody was there to receive my call and I keep getting bumped back to the main Met switchboard. I'll keep trying later.

  • Ha good luck with that ^^^ Donut munching takes time and concentration.

  • Got through to the Islington station finally. Gave them the details of the bike and they said they'd look into it– looking at missing/stolen bikes reported and get back to me in a few hours. Doubt that is going to happen though.

  • If you find the guy whose bike it is, I hope that they realise the lengths you have gone to to find them.

Dictionary definition of above and beyond = this situation.

Thanks for the kind words! Now I don't have the nicest bike in the world, it's just cobbled together from parts and such. But I've been riding that thing around London a ton for the last 3 years and I'd be gutted to lose it. So I'm just doing what I hope somebody else would do if they found my bike.

  • your kharma bank balance is looking good :p

could be that it was a stolen bike and person using it couldn't care less or wanted it gone?
leaving details with local station + poster at bike stand + gumtree are the most sensible things, well done.

  • surely it's like finding a baby bird which has fallen out of it's nest
they always say never touch it the mother will find it and rescue it
if you take it away from the place it has fallen the mother will NEVER be able to find it
