Wanted: Witcomb advice

  • Hello all!

Someone has offered to sell me their Witcomb steel bike ("hand/custom made"). It's a couple of years old, prob got 1000 miles on it, geared with Campag Mirage kit, VGC, although it does have his name painted on it(!) I have no idea what that would be worth? Can anyone give me an idea?

Also, are Witcomb still in business? Their website doesn't seem to work.

  • Some reading here on Witcomb

  • Cheers. Shame theyre out of business - looks like it's now an expensive ltd edition then! He reckons he paid >2k for it, can believe it now.

  • ....2k and only Campag. Mirage? sounds a trifle optimistic on cost! try You Tube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E3did2RUTBc

  • Thats a lovely video, nostalgic and rather sweet actually, thanks for the link.

  • If it's only a couple of years old, it will be one of the very last frames Barrie Witcomb made and will therefore have an element of rarity value.

I have got a Witcomb that is about 4 years old and it's a brilliant frame. If you decide not to buy it, I would probably be interested.

  • Cool, thanks. I've almost def decided to buy it buy it, but will let you know.

  • Naaah they're shit, don't touch it with a bargepole.

    What's the seller's number btw?

  • I was extremely close to buying one when the prices went up 160%, I wish I'd got in before DaPhoney ruined things.

I'd get it, dependent on it being a good price- I imagine that you could compare to a similar Bob Jackson for pricing reference?

I'm sure someone else will weigh in on that.

  • Richard Sachs learnt to build there in the 70,s because nobody else would take him on ,legendary shop & frames

  • Yeah. Gonna buy it. Will post a pic when I get it for the interested peeps.

  • I need to get round to rebuilding the one I have a 1989, 56cm x 56cm , Columbus SLX in gunmetal grey with chrome rear stays and chrome forks that in mint and beautiful.

    ^cool story innit bro!

  • Seems to be a week of this. My mate Mark picked up a full one (80s I guess) yesterday which had been used on a turbo only. Whole thing for £70. Pfft.

  • Here it is: Witcomb Pic
