Paint Sealant/Angle Grinder

Hey there everyone,

I've finally managed to get a seapost out of a frame using the caustic soda method, but managed to get quite a lot on the paint. Since it's just gonna be a beater/polo i don't really care about the paint itself, but atm the paint comes off to the touch, which is a bit useless.

So, does anyone know of a cheap paint sealant that can be used on bikes? Do i use car paint sealant?

Also, the threads in the left crank arm have been stripped (by me) and i can't get the old BB out without getting the arm off first. There doesn't seem to be any other way to do this except an angle grinder, which i don't have. Anyone in the Lewisham-ish area who has one that they are willing to lend to me for a quick job? I'd obviously get my own disc, but i'd rather not have to buy the whole shabang.

Any other alternative advice would also be appreciated,

Ooo, should have googled harder, all the ones i saw were atleast 30 quid. Might aswell for that price... Any advice on the paint anyone?

any cheap red oxide primer in a can

^ red oxide is very slightly porous, so after a few months it'll absorb water and your frame will rust/paint will start flaking off again. It's not designed as a topcoat. Epoxy primers are waterproof though.

Cheapest permanent solution would be Hammerite or a similar one-step primer/topcoat system.

Bollocks.

Just cycled to B&Q to get some red oxide primer. Got completely soaked through. Fucking awesome ride tho.

Dry it out against a warm radiator overnight, and just put any old topcoat over it. In fact, so long as you don't leave the bike outside/in a damp shed, red oxide will probably not cause any rust problems.

Just swapped the primer for some normal hammerite metal paint, should do nicely

Also, got an angle grinder from Argos for a pretty good 18 quid, after looking at the abysmal reviews for the cheap Maplin and B&Q ones. Comes with a cutting disc too, which the others don't for some reason...

Ok, so i've got the angle grinder, i've grinded the crank as far down as is possible with the size of disc. However, I can't get all the way down to the axle without the disc catching the BB shell. Is there any way of getting around this problem? I don't think the grinder would survive getting through the axle.

Can't you cut around the axle? Just remove as much metal as possible until it falls apart

a bit late now but if you spray the crank/axle with some plusgas and losen the bolts and then ride your bike around for a bit the crank will fall off. just ride up a hill with some resistance. this will damage the taper but since you are using a grinder not a concern.

^ kinda hard cos it's got no headset/wheels/driveside crank/anything yet lol, but thanks for the advice. Gonna put on a fresh disc and try cutting another slit opposite it, but i think there's still a lot of metal there. I could also try cutting a load of slits perpendicular to the axle, but that means cutting a lot of metal, dunno if these cheap Argos discs will last long.

By all means, just been doing a bit more, i think i've taken enough off to get the crank off now, but need to wait for the damn thing to cool down a bit first.

Some pics are better than others, basically i now just need something to lever the gap apart a bit, a screwdriver can't hack it and i don't have a crowbar :/
