Filling a drilled chainstay bridge

Posted on
  • Just picked up a cheapish 531 track frame to restore and the rear chainstay bridge is drilled for a brake. The fork isn't. Anyway, looks like it's all going to get painted - how can I fill the hole without the ghost of it returning under the new paint? Should I just put in a new chainstay? Thanks...

  • i did something similar - if the frame's being hand sprayed (not powder coated) then car body repair filler should do the job. couple of applications sanding between each application.

    something like this...

    http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_167503_langId_-1_categoryId_165625

  • won't that crack and fall out? frame flex and mild corrosion and filler falls off?

if you don't have anyone to braze/weld a pile of filler in there, a tight fitting bolt that goes all the way through, then cut and grind it back down until flush would be my best suggestion.

  • if you cant get it filled with brass use JB Weld it wont shrink or crack and can be sanded down flush

  • filler may well crack/drop out (it didn't on the frame I did the fill on) but I imagine it ain't worth paying someone to braze a cheapo frame unless you know someone or know how to do it yourself, otherwise you may as well buy a new frame IMHO. It's a cheap solution to a fairly unimportant aesthetic issue.

  • wouldn't recommend using filler anywhere else on the bike though mind!
