26" wheel advice

Posted on
  • hello everybody!
my kona's quando/rigida rear wheel is shot (the rim is whack out) and needs replacing. i have a sunn rhinolite rim to rebuild it with which will do but i saw these and wondered whether they'd be ok:

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BANKRUPT-26-Q-R-SINGLE-SPEED-135mm-RIGIDA-SKEWERS-/170630950620?pt=UK_sportsleisure_cycling_bikeparts_SR&hash=item27ba65aedc

similar quality but then a deeper section rim than i currently have.

the kona is 135 rear spacing and finding 26" single speed wheelsets is a fucken nightmare. anyone got any sweet advice? is there a better hub? maybe a flip flop hub (ss)?

    cheers,
see you in steel city in july or at the open.

    matt

  • That seems pretty good to me, I found a singlespeed hub on a mangled old rim, and want to build it to some old 26" rims I have lying around, but this is quicker...if you only need a rear, is it the hub/rim thats shot? maybe just build a rear with the rim you haz.

  • yeah, should have said its the rear rim thats shot.

  • the other option is something like the Halo combats like this:

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Halo-Combat-Single-Speed-Wheels-PAIR-26-White-NEW-/190487297684?pt=UK_sportsleisure_cycling_bikeparts_SR&hash=item2c59ed7e94

but then maybe i'd need to swap my front chain ring? 28t at the mo. plus, these fat rims with v-brakes are a little wide, no?

  • See if you can borrow Gav's Halos to see how they'd set up.

  • struggling to find 135 ss hubs? you're not looking hard enough

  • If you've got the cash or if you want some choice and if you're feeling flush.

  • Why are they a nightmare Matt?

Just in case you didn't see this

I might be going 26" but want to keep my Nexus 7 speed. Would this work on this rim?

    #highjack,sorry!

  • Make your life easier and get a freehub mtb hub and a single speed kit. Deore is pretty hard wearing kit, and cheap. Go for Hope pro 2 SS if you want zero dish for a stronger wheel. Sprockets are 3 quid each, everything can be serviced by any bike mechanic (especially deore), and the freehub internals are easier to replace if they fail.

  • or just stick with 700c, didn't you just get a pompino joni?!

  • Yes but there's always something in the pipeline. :)

  • its been hard work finding a 26" ss wheelset but yeah, i could build one up.
taxi's hub recommendations look sweet. at the moment i'm going to stick this new Sunn rim on the quando hub, which should be straight forward.

  • Have a look on pinkbike.com Matt. There are one or two SS, a couple of conversions, but not that cheap. Cheaper to build I reckon.
I'm still after a 48h 26" rim to go with my sweet hub, but looks like there are none cheaper than £30.
Got one of those Sun rims just in case.

  • What frame are you putting the 26s on joni?

  • can you not still get supercheap singlespeed mtb hubs from on-one?

  • What frame are you putting the 26s on joni?

    Not the pomp ;)

Pipeline / pipe dreams. Time will tell.

  • Has anybody seen this?
They are double wall and quite sturdy. I've been using them for a while now and they have withstood the abuse. http://www.bcity.es/detalle.php?cod=233&fam=12&sfa=41
Not the best hubs (cheap loose bearing hubs), but you can buy just the rim if you want (less than 20€).
    They ship anywhere.

  • 100mm OLD though?

Edit, didn't look at the hub, doh.

  • so thats a front? where be the rear?

  • ''trasera disponible''

  • 135mm spaced hubs

fourth one down looks like a pretty sweet set up.
