Look Keo movement - help!

Posted on
  • I have a new pair of Keo classics and there seems to be some vertical play, for want of a better term. I have the normal float side to side however when I pull up on the pedal stroke there is a slight lift and click in the mechanism.

I've clipped the shoes in without me in them and it looks as if there is some play on the front part of the cleat, where the cleat slips in before you push down and it secures at the back. It's only a mm or 2 but is feels shitty and is a bit frustrating.

What I want to know is if this is normal? I've never used Keo's before but have used atacs for ages and while they have more float they seem a lot more rigid when pulling up. This doesn't seem right to me as I bought road pedals for better power transfer, not worse.

  • The clicking on the upstroke sounds a bit sketchy. I have no play in mine at all.

  • Weird. I think I'll be taking them back

  • Hmmm, sounds like there is some thing not quite right here.

LOOK Keo's are usually pretty good pedals

Hard to do diagnosis by email but here goes !

Do you have keo compatible cleats or original look ones ?
Some of the compatables especially the welgo ones are not such a good fit

Are the cleats worn or damaged at the front lip ?
this would make a difference to one but probably not both .

Are the pedals at minimum tension ?
Tighten them up to mid tension, my money is on this one as they pedals usually come set at minimum tension and the cleats rattle about in the pedal cage.

If none of this helps take them back to the LBS for advice or replacement .

    Hope that helps,

    Allister

  • Cheers Alistair.

Cleats are keos, and came in the box with the pedals (all brand new). I played around with the tension as that was my first thought however the movement seems to be coming from where the front lip of the cleat slips in under the pedal, not at the back where the spring is. This part of the pedal/cleat combo is not mechanichal so I can't adjust it.

They are only Keo classics so are not exactly top notch kit however I was expecting more.

  • It's probably worth checking the threads on the shoes and the cleat bolts.

  • Might be worth checking the rubbery oval thing that pops through the cleat and rests on the pedal.

In the past I have had trouble with the rubbery thing moving and causing movement between cleat and pedal.

  • ^ This.

    All solid and correct.

Everything looks right and sits flush with the sole of the shoe (Sidi Genius 5), just with a 1mm gap between the front of the cleat and the pedal, where the arrow points below. When I take the shoes off and clip them in I can see the gap and wiggle it vertically.

  • i've had nothing but trouble with mine... one was supplied with a faulty mechanism, so it can happen, take it back to the shop and get it changed?

  • That's pretty much where I'm at. I just wasn't sure what to expect from them or what was normal. It's my first experience with clipless apart from Time Atacs, which I have used for years with no trouble at all.
