  • afternoon all.

after having done the last 2 runs down to the stones for the solstice it's time to do it again.

last year with shoots we took a lovely run from aylesbury.
i'd be tempted to roll out of london this time for the full a to b experience.

    destination will be avebury stones.

the solstice is on the 21st which is a tuesday so the ride will leave on the monday night.

trains back from swindon or salisbury are very easy.

i will be working tuesday night! yay.

    this was the last one.

  • Just had been looking at this last weekend.

So I have just now booked a ticket for the 08.08-09:21h train from Pewsey which is 10 miles from Avebury as I will have to work on the Tuesday, it was only £16 including the bike reservation.

This means leaving Avebury at 06.30h; you are planning to have arrived well by then Steve, is this correct?

  • Well done, Steve. Was an excellant ride last year. Ride out from central London would be fine by me. Perhaps also the same route as last year, once we're through Princes Risborough?

kicked myself for not coming last year.

  • quickly scoured the other threads but couldn't find much info. how long is this ride and whats the route like etc?
this is three days after my last exam and i'm definitely up for it providing i can get my new bike built.

  • Would be great to have you along, Joe . I'm sure we'll get a route hammered out before too long. My guess is that its's approx 80 miles.

'Night miles' can't be done as fast as 'day miles' and because your body is most accustomed to being asleep at that time it can be a little trying. However in good weather the emptiness of the country lanes and mysterious stillness of the landscape is mildly thrilling.

Avebury itself is undoubtedly a remarkable location, I remember the travellers and (small) police presence gave something of a sense of occasion as we rolled in. Mostlly I remember losing most of my body heat as we waited for the sun to break the horizon.

  • Good info. With sunrise at 04.49h we should aim to arrive at 04.30h sharply then. I take it Steve is sorting a buffet that will await us on arrival; or is it every saddlebag for himself?

superb idea for a ride, found the thread too late last year to join the ride, looking fwd to it

  • i'm gonna be working on a route out of london.

will do some work on it over the next few days and get it up when it's done.

departure is likely to be 2000 from speakers corner.
that leaves 8 hrs to ride getting in for 0400ish.

    Brilliant ride idea

  • Yeah the realengers were there first. And the Neolithic bronze-age culture who built these structures.

  • note to fakengers: no. you won’t make it.

Note to messengers: yes. I will make it. [<Bill]

Er, 9 hours to ride 90 miles? What you doing it on, Bromptons?

    Nah, drugs.

    Ha!

  • God I can't wait. We're doing this fixed, right?

  • hell yes.
