Wider rims = "Clinchular"???

  • Was on the Strada website and read this:

The Velocity A23 has been described as a “Clinchular” because it has all the benefits of a tubular tyre (smooth ride quality, lower rolling resistance) with the convenience of a clincher tyre (ease of installation, easy to repair a flat). The added rim width (23mm) makes the tyre wall sit straighter on the rim providing a ride like a tubular with the convenience of a clincher. http://www.stradawheels.co.uk/shop/velocity-a23-wheelset/

Im sure I've heard of this before but my (painful) experience is that if the rim is too wide you will roll your clincher!

Is this the latest BS marketing from rim manufacturers or is there some credibility?

    Thoughts?

  • Stupid name.

  • "all the benefits of a tubular" I don't fink so ..

  • Stupid name.

    Ouch that hurt!

  • 23mm wide rims are becomming something of an industry trend. Its a nock on from Zipp's clincher revolutions. Alot of road wheel manufacturers are jumping on the band wagon, makes clinchers ride like tubs. Win. Not that this is really the reason behin the TB14...

TB14s hit Europe in about 6 weeks if I remember correctly.
Black / Polished Silver / Hard Ano (Mavic grey).

So on this whole 23 thing. What 'road rims' - conform to this new style?

  • Wow, now I can have a roadbike with too wide rims to match my MTB with too narrow rims.

  • HED have been doing something similar for ages.

I'd have thought you're more likely to roll a clincher (underinflated) on a rim that's too narrow.

  • So on this whole 23 thing. What 'road rims' - conform to this new style?

Hed started it with the C2 Ardennes rim which has been around since 2008 at least, Velocity A23 more recently and now the Hplus.
