If you know anyone with a costco card you can get a nice 5 or 6 knife global set with a holder for about £150 which is a steal.

I'm sure someone like Xander will come in a recommend something really expensive with a fancy name. But I'm a big fan of the Global knives.
Used one of these bad boys for years at home. -

Zwilling, J.A. Henckels Germany, had this (one in the middle) for over 7 years and still perfect

it was a gift but I think you could get it for around 60 pounds

not too keen on the global chef's knife, find it too big
quite like a smaller one though, looks something like this

Henckels or Wusthof, cannot go wrong really.
(Apart from spelling the names)

wusthof will last you years, also Victorinox are really good
there's a good catering shop on fulham road, it;s probably something better bought in real life than online

I'm used to using a knife the size/weight of a butchers knife, so meh.

happy to spend towards £100 if it's worth it, but would certainly not mind getting away for less

make sure you get a good sharpening steel too, none of that plastic block shit with the notches and wheels

Standard chefs knife is 8" I believe, that's not a huge butchers scimitar.
I find it frustrating using anything smaller than that generally.

I've always been a fan of global, worked at a catering company for years and there is a lot to be said for just a decent chef's knife as you can use it for most jobs as long as you look after it.
I got a set of Jean Patrique sushi knives about 6 years ago that are still going strong, and if you do a bit of googling they're probably still doing their crazy, just pay for the postage offer, so I got 3 and leather roll to keep them in for about £15. They're not going to be great otherwise why would they sell them like that, but they lasted me this long

Global knives ftw. Except when you drop them on your foot. Then not so good.

There we go!
http://www.jeanpatriqueoffers.co.uk/promotions/jp0170f-site
looking at it now it looks dodgy as hell, but I went for it my first year at uni and had no problems
I've decided to ditch my ikea chef knife for something better. I've done some googling but as usual it's all contradicting and payed for, so wonder if anyone here can recommend something decent? Happy to pay a fair bit as long as it will last me a fair while
will use it for general cooking, mainly vegetarian and fish should that matter
