Oil Stains

  • What are your tips for getting oil off hands, jeans, carpets etc?

I'm in a bit of trouble with Mrs Asito for getting dirty chain oil on the carpet. I'm sure I'm not the first, so what works best for getting it off?

    Cheers!

  • for hands i use washing up liquid with sugar, works a treat

Yeah washing up liquid and something abrasive like sugar/salt is great for getting rid of oil from hands.

Carpet though? I don't know. Red wine maybe?

Not in the long run though. I used to work as a mechanic and the gaffer had horrible painful cracks in his hands from using washing up liquid and salt for years.

Swarfega, Deb Lime Green or Manista Natural are all good and available cheaply from motor factors/Halfords etc

  • I went for industrial strength carpet cleaner - with successful result :)

Nice one on the sugar + washing-up liquid tip. Good one for arriving at work with mucky hands.

  • Just done this to my beige carpet.

Which industrial strength cleaner did you use?

  • I use a bit of degreaser.

  • bikes + beige carpet = facepalm

  • in my experience, it's all about tons of washing up liquid to get the stain out.

  • would salt work?

  • ^^
only if you spill some red wine on carpet before hand

  • Actually it was a double face palm.

    Proper Home Alone stuff.

  • vanish stain remover crystals, mixed up strong. worked for me to get chain oil off a beige carpet.

never tried salt or sugar, but if you completely rub your dirty hands with vegetable oil, then generously add some dishwashing soap and rub that in as well, and then rinse off under water, your hands will be clean of even the meanest dirt. works better than most grainy cleaning pastes ive tried and is easier on the skin.

  • I used dishwashing liquid on mine and it worked a treat. So good in fact that there is now one clean patch in the middle of the carpet.........

  • spray my hands with wd40 then washing up liquid, it works.

  • I've used Mr Muscle kitchen cleaner on mine, then carpet cleaner if it's really bad. That seems to work.

  • 1001 carpet cleaner, just had to use it on a flat i was leaving, worked a treat and half the price of vanish
