  • The sun's come out, so I've found some weekends and sorted some routes. Amongst them is a highlight from last year that I'm keen to repeat:-

    [ame]http://www.bikemap.net/route/729884[/ame]

It's just a lovely route, it really is. The scenery is stunning, the roads are well surfaced, and the traffic is minimal throughout.

Climbs? Climbs. Some are short and sharp, others are long and winding, but all are very much worth a go. Bikemap suggests about 2700m ascension, while last year my Garmin ended on a shade under 3500m (including the ride out). I reckon that the real figure is much closer to the second reading than the first. Just think of the final descent into Skipton, twenty easy miles, leaving behind the last ascent - the highest pass in Yorkshire!

The current logistical deal is this:-

I'm training from Kings Cross to Keighly on the evening of Saturday May 28th. The route proper starts at Skipton, which is the obvious destination station, but I'm in bargain basement digs on Saturday night, to which Keighly is the closest station.

I'll then ride all day Sunday, returning to London from Skipton in the evening, after eating whatever takes my fancy at least twice.

At the time of writing, train tickets are about £40, but you bet your boots they'll go up very soon. The cost of accommodation varies, but local youth hostels are under £20.00 for the night, and around Skipton there's no shortage of options (keep in mind that this is a bank holiday weekend).

If any of this sounds like an organisational nightmare, then rest assured that it's not. A spot of fiddling with thetrainline, a Google for a place to stay, a paperback for the train, and a jersey filled with with cereal bars. Done.

This ride is suited to anyone who reckons that they can push themselves around with relative form. It's a challenging route, but we've an entire day in which to do it, and I've no problem setting off in the wee smalls if it makes sure that the route is completed in time for the train home. The emphasis is on maintaining a steady spin (with coffee stops!), rather than whipping around at full whack (better you than me). My bike will have lots of gears, and yours should, too (sorry).

Self-sufficiency is key. I know you lot know the score – much more so than me (but please ask if you don't), in fact I'm reasonably sure that anyone considering the trip will be of the sort who knows how to prepare adequately.

So drop me a note if you're up for a day in the Dales (or with any questions), and yes, I'm pretty sure that I'll end up going on my own.

    Friday (April 15th)

  • :( but also :)

    (baby time)

  • ^That's a tricky route, from what I hear (with a journey time of around twenty years).

    Good luck Moe.

  • Interested. Will look at organising things over the coming week.

  • Nice one.

  • Might be about for this, checking on the pass situation as the girlfriend is keen to go to the Lake District (something about wanting to train for the Helvellyn Triathlon).

I'll keep an eye on this.

  • ^Out of interest, I'm headed for the lakes over June 18th - 19th (travel to Keswick 18th, ride 19th, home from Windermere in the evening). I might also return there later in the year.

  • bye eckers like.. i love these parts, if i can get a weekend pass i'll join you on the train to keighley, hopefully i can find overnight stay in skipton.. some of the climbs out of the dales are 1 in 4, also makes for some tricky / cautious descending.

i prefer yorkshire dales to the lake district btw

  • That's a lovely route.

  • Fancy riding it, Em? I'm in for this one I reckon - It's be rude not to!

  • Seriously tempted, I need to clear it with the lady.

    The pitch:
Let's head up to Skipton on Friday night to see my parental unit, then you can go over to York to see your family on Saturday afternoon, we'll both head back to the badlands on Monday morning so we're home in time for a Monday night roast.

I'll let you know when I have the answer...

  • Sweet plan.

    Monday night roast.

    Can i watch? :-)

  • Oh Luci!

  • *goes to the naughty step.

    Again.

  • Looks like I'm probably in, potentially bringing another with me too.

  • Yorkshire's soon, time to offer the following:-

I'm currently planning to set off from Skipton Train Station at around **8:30 on Sunday **(May 29th, but you knew that). I need to be back in Skipton for the evening's return home, but this leaves *bags *of room for riding at a comfortable pace / admiring the view / devouring some restorative cake.

Trains between London and Skipton are now prohibitively pricey, so says thetrainline, but if you've got an opportunity to get yourself North then do take the plunge. You'll not be disappointed. Unless it rains.

  • Shit, I'm not able to ride.

    Got to work, FFS.

    Not a happy bunny...

  • No worries mate.

If anyone near Skipton fancies caning their knees alongside a perpetually embarrassed idiot in what will inevitably be the pissing rain... then drop me a note.

  • Bollocks.

All packed, checked, and mueslied up, then I arrive at Kings Cross to be told that the trains to Leeds are off until further notice.

I didn't have the heart to faff around with alternative routes, instead opting for a refund; though already I'm questioning my lack of tenacity. Mebe I could have pushed through from York or summin'. Just as well that I was on my tod for this one, really.

    Yawn.

Time for a bit of Swains'.

  • Bad luck, Nick.

  • Fucking hell, bad luck Nick.

  • Not bad luck! The weather is horrible here today. It's not cold, but it's blowing a gale with intermittent sideways drizzle. It would have been a miserable day in the saddle!

Let's get a different date on paper - the route looked breathtaking, it would be a shame not to ride it at some point.

On another note, me and a mate are riding this soon:
    http://www.wayoftheroses.info/

Looking to do it in the day. B&B for single night in Morecambe, B&B booked in Bridlington. Should be epic.

Absolutely. I'll have a look at my calendar when I'm next in front of Internet that isn't funneled through my girlfriend's iPhone. Shame not to fit it in, as you say.

  • how about 11th june for original route?

count me in, but I don't have many weekends off... weekend of 11th june and the one after, then nothing for a while...

also are you very fit? I'll manage the climbs and mileage, but not at race pace.
