  • I need help stripping and repainting my disgusting bike. I'm pretty clueless in this department so would really appreciate a hand or at least some pointers. Also does anyone know where i could get some decent (working) parts for my bike, without busting my wallet too much.

    Thanks
    Barry

  • Unless the frame is something special, it's probably not worth re-spraying tbh.

I did one once, really wasn't worth the cost and the end result was pretty disappointing - getting it done professionally seemed even more expensive, and generally not worth it either...

(I fully expect you to ignore all this and re-spray it anyway ;P)

  • my frame is nothing exciting but it gets me from A to B, now i want it to get me from A to B without looking like Barney The Dinosaur puked all over it haha, thanks anyway dude!

  • you can buy decent pain stripper from wilkinson cheapest and wire wool.. very straight forward... or u can take it to some companies to sand blast and powder coat it for u for about £60. i can pm u details... let me know via pm

  • You can get chemical paint stripper, strip the sucker down (you'll also need sand paper and possibly a drill with a sanding attachment to get it all off)

then a can of primer (at least!) to give it a good base coat

    then 2-4 cans of colour

    then a can of clearcoat

plenty of space, plenty of light (to see how even your coats are) plenty of patience and somewhere dust/flys aren't going to get at it while it drys

I'm sure others will disagree, but I found it a royal pain in the ass :P

(all this only applys to rattle-canning it)

  • i painted a frame once, it took weeks and cost me about £30 in materials and paint, and it looked totally shit.

i know it can be done cheaper better but, take it to bettablast i say

  • where is bettablast?

  • here are some pix

  • is bettablast like next to the metro radio?

normally has old school cars outside?

  • bettablast is 10-15 mins walk from shiremoor metro, not bad like, i had my old frame done there.

alternatively, nitromorse, wire wool + rattle can!

  • tristan help me do it, i'll buy the stuff when i get paid, i'm only going for a matte black frame atm.

  • painting bikes is a skill

  • if your not to arsed just rough the paint up with some fine sand paper so its even then spray straight over it

  • Just completed a fixie frame and forks and a bmx frame forks bars and cranks, been riding them for a couple of weeks and they've both held up well, the fixie doesn't have any clear coat on either and surprisingly its holding up well, took me a good while to get all the paint off but the finish is unbelievably good

  • Don't forget some sort of polish for when it's done, can be had for under a fiver. It's pretty cheap to do just needs effort from you. To do my forks cost me under £7 to do, and I got a pretty good finish to :D

  • the bike -

    the mug -

this guy had the piss ripped out of him in the names &faces thread.

    polish??

    you mean laquer presumably......

  • how much did bettablast cost to strip and re paint a frame?

  • About 45 for a flat colour when I got mine done

  • not too bad like, might head down when i get paid. fuck sandpapering factory paint.

  • much impressed with bettablast ... they even filled in the huge chunks i took out of my frame sawing off the pump braze-ons ... just posted the bike on the bikes and faces page (err actually i failed so i just linked to my flickr page).
quality finish, dirt cheap and a really nice guy IMO ... money well spent

  • Just got some nitromors and wire wool, just looking for seafoam green paint now!

  • Do yourself a favour and don't bother using the nitro mors just sand the frame some. Primer it alot and then respray in the colour of your choice. Unless your really good at respraying don't go for a gloss finish because you won't get the finish you desire. Go for a Matt or satin. If you would like mire info you can pm me as I have resprayed many bikes and a car in satin and they hve all come out perfectly

  • I was going for a matte finish anyway, but thanks for the information, with luck I'll start working on the bike this Friday though I'll pm you if I come up against any problems.

  • I'm doing a strip down ATM and was wondering about holes on the frame and whether I can fill them in with some auto 2 part filler then rub down? Do these holes need to be kept and do they serve a purpose, that is to drain moisture from inside tubes, I have a small hole near one of the lugs. As shown in pix. To follow..
