Canti brake help... Pompino

  • Had a look round the site to see if there was anything on this subject but couldn't find anything. Some background first..........

Got a new Pompino, but chose to build it myself. They forgot to send the canti brake hanger for the front, but this has now arrived. This is the first time for me with canti brakes as well.

I have roadie brake levers and want to know if I need a cable adjuster to go on the front hanger and the rear hanger before I fit the brakes?

I hope this makes sense, would like to get them fitted soon, so that I can ride on the hoods.

    Many thanks

  • You don't need cable adjusters, you can adjust the cable with the cable fixing clamp, just loosen the bolt with your allen key, and pull some cable through. The adjusters simply make it possible to tighten everything without tools, but as you probably have the tools, they are not really that necessary!

  • You can now get inline cable adjusters, too. Putting one of those in the cabling before say, a cable stop on the frame, would also give you the option of adjustment. It isn't NEEDED but it's a fucking pain without.

Incidentally, if you find that your cable/lever modulation are out cus of them being road levers, you can get roadie levers that have a long cable pull.

  • Road levers work fine with canti brakes, but I would definitely fit adjusters on the hangers. It's difficult to fine tune brakes just by using the cable nut. Also, check Sheldon Brown for information on setting up cantis.

  • Adjusters are good for when the brake pads wear down. Saves re setting the cable each time you buy a new set. They're only cheap too.

  • Cheers all for the replies, just read Sheldon as well, think this is a job for tomorrow evening, after the baby has gone to bed. Will try with adjusters first to see if it works or not.

  • Right all done, without cable adjusters - now comes the interesting bit of getting the brakes to actually stop the bike!!!!! works really well on the stand!!!! ( Sheldon and Zinn here I come!!!)

  • So rode it this morning to work. Like the fact that I can ride on the hoods, and was pleasantly surprised that the brakes do actually work, in a fashion!! They do help to slow down. Would be interesting to try them while the bike is only SS and not fixed. But happy that they work!

  • If anyone needs some of these, I have a full set up for sale.
