Wanted: Freewheel 22T for £10

Posted on
  • Need one quickly for polo
Ideally 3/32 cos 1/8 would make me buy a chain as well.
    Anyone?

  • Ask in the polo upgrades thread as well perhaps.

EDIT: and it's kinda weird stating a price.
    justsayin'

EDIT MY EDIT: Freemans do them for £12.

EDIT MY EDITED EDIT: They're £13 here http://www.freemanscycles.co.uk/product2.asp?product_id=1182&pname=Single%20Speed%20Freewheel%20%2822T
There 's already a thread on these somewhere.
    Don't make me edit again.

  • oki doki, thanks for the infos.
Just stating a price as a guide really, I have a tiny budjet so I might as well state that up front.

EDIT: found this http://www.spacycles.co.uk/products.php?show=2354 as well.
Was hoping to get one before Saturday's game.

EDIT: Can you find them easily in bike shops?

  • I don't think there are many shops that have them. Again, ask in the polo forum, that's your best bet if you want it by tomorrow.

  • watch out with the really cheap ones, they can be really hard to get off because some have no groove for a removal tool. You have to literally destroy them to take them off.

  • and they would also be super tight from polo use, ok I'll keep that in mind.

  • It's worth trying local bike shops, I was in a&w in south wimbledon and a guy was buying an old 21t freewheel while I was in there.

Although a&w is the greatest lbs ever, it's run by 2 guys in their 60's who build the most solid wheels I've ever had and it's basically floor to ceiling with boxes of parts. It's worth going in there to see what a proper bike shop should be.

  • hehe, ok. Sounds like G.Lucifer's lbs as he describes in his blog

  • Go microdrive, get some 24t onza cranks, you'll find a 16t freewheel anywhere.

A bit more expensive (£35 or so for the crankset), but those Freeman 22t are junk, mine was 'sticky' first of all, and worse now it doesnt engage for a half rotation on one in every thirty or so spins (= teeth first into your handlebars) and as mentioned above, impossible to get off without destruction. Avoid like the plague.

  • I'd even give you the one I have for free - but its on a wheel, and there's no way its coming off without getting destroyed.

  • Sounds like I'll have to stay on fixed for a little while longer :(

  • Have other people had issues with Freeman cycles 22T? I bought one a few weeks ago and just put it on and while not sticky as described, it doesn't look to be spinning true... as in it wobbles side to side, doesn't seem to be rubbing on owt but looks weird, never put a freewheel on so not sure if this is normal...

  • got myself a 20t ACS freewheel from ebay, which sounds similar to a WI, and with a similar appearence. it's 3/32 as well so can keep my original chain!
Dunno about the freeman cycles one but I think this is sensible advice against getting it :

watch out with the really cheap ones, they can be really hard to get off because some have no groove for a removal tool. You have to literally destroy them to take them off.

  • Cedric, WI freewheels are in a league of their own, they are serviceable and run on sealed bearings, which I doubt the ACS do. They too are 3/32.

  • Didn't you told me not to get a ACS freewheel my dear Cedy? And I hope my WI still hasn't find its way to your polo bike yet. Unless of course if you pay me double of what I have paid hassan then you can have it all you like!!

  • I'll give you a 10er and we can swap.
    Nah I would never...

  • it's 3/32 as well
    ;)

You play polo in the wet/grit do you?

  • Seems to imply otherwise when read together with the rest. In any case, sorted out your mini + conventional v dual brake setup? As for the sealed bearing question, what about your hubs? Exposed to wet and grit? ;)

  • my road ones are, my polo ones aren't, go figure... :D
Brake system is on hold, wondering is those other dual levers have different pull which would be perfect for me. Would you be able to point me to anyone who has experience with them?

I suspect it does, but I can't see why trike users would want this, would love to see a pic of them open to see where the cables are connected.

    Edit:

hmm, so this would have effect as a transmission differential, no sure I want that but it means pull is compensated to some extent.
