Omar, nice thread. As a newly minted freelance promo director it's good there is a place I can aske stupid media questions and also see if I can grab some people for small beer for personal projects I've got rollin around in my head..
Anyone need any info on making television promos let me know, worked at the beeb for a decade and now doing bits for discovery, espn and eurosport, and hopefully others if I sort my showreel out.

Go on then, first test for the thread.
A friend of mine is a fantastic artist. He works as a concept artworker for a pretty big feature production company. He's very creative and has a lot of great ideas. He's just written a script for a short which he's been banging on about for about 2 years. When he first mentioned it to me I was really keen. The idea sounded great and I expressed an interest in producing it (I've produced music videos and short films in the past but am currently a news producer of sorts.) He sent me the script last night and, without beating around the bush, it's shit. It's really, really, really shit. It's like I imagine the treatment for the Rebecca Black 'Friday' promo to be. But maybe a bit worse.
Thing is, he's very self concious about it. And very self-aware about the fact that it's taken so long as he's been trying to get it right. How do I either A. go about subbing it to something I'd feel comfortable producing (because the heart of the story is still a really dark/funny and original idea) or do I tell him to re-do it?
When I've received scripts and treatments in the past my reaction has been more like: "lose this line, more of this, reword this". This will require a complete rewrite but I don't want to make the guy feel like shit and put him off.

Does he want to direct it as well? Maybe persuade him that by getting the script finessed by someone else he can focus more on the 'look' of it.

I like it. You're hired.

Sort of related to this topic I do animation and motion graphics, storyboards etc. From time to time I need stuff dumped to tape. Good to keep an eye on this thread.

I've just bought a Barbour jacket. Any jobs going where you can pretend that you know what you're doing? I have experience in walking around the set back home - everyone knew me, but were not sure what my duties were. Good times.

I have seen this so many times on location for real EEI.. Once saw a sparks pick up a 575 and walk it to the other side of the studio.. Stop. Talk. Point. Pick it up and walk it back to where he started from. He repeated this for 3 hours
Your problem is that the Barbour jacket over qualifies you.. It's all about a North Face puffa vest nowadays.

I like teamwork. That's why I like rigging. The only problem is - - I gave up smoking, so there's nothing much to do when you work as a team.
The rule is = who doesn't smoke - does work. -

I'm not sure I can offer to help with anything advertised on here so far, but I thought I'd give everyone a heads up as to who I am and hopefully something will come of it.
I am currently in my second year studying Broadcast Operations at Ravensbourne. I am trying to gain experience in all areas of TV production and would love to help with any projects anybody has at the moment. I am more interested in the operations side of things than production (with the aim of eventually becoming a camera operator) however I enjoy everything to do with TV production, am very enthusiastic and I would love to get involved with working in a professional environment.
I have experience with many broadcast cameras including Sony HDC1500 HXC100 DSR570
Panasonic HPX 371 HPX 500 HDX900.Also, being a student, I am fairly flexible on time so if you have anything that you think I could help you with please let me know.
Thanks, Jack.

Anyone know any camera operators in Vienna (or crew hire firms)? Crewsfornews are quoting me 750 quid a day for a 2 day shoot next week. For that I could rent kit here, fly there, hotel for 3 nights and shoot myself (not like that). Which is actually what I've been asked to do - but I don't want or have time to. Surely Austria has cheap ops? Help!

Have you tried Shooting People?
That's how columbine started.
Now i know there are a fair few film and TV technicians on here and also a good number of directors, agency people, film students and other people from the 'creative industries'(sorry) around as well so i thought somewhere to post on the forum could be useful.
There are often posts from people looking for people to come shoot something last minute or in need of equipment and advice so if it could be used as somewhere for people to go with their questions and requests from like minded people rather than on shooting people, mandy etc.
As a clapper loader with 4 years experience working on low budget features and TV dramas moving up to focussing and going through the usual early year under employment phase it would be good to find anyone shooting a cheap ass music promo who needs crew to gather more experience and similarly if anyone needs to know how to load an Arri 416 mag, lace a Panaflex or set a Red camera to ramp from 25fps to 100fps (or other such random questions) then maybe these questions could be answered by someone on here. Similarly if you want to get some problems of your chest somewhere that your colleagues are most likely not going to be looking or you have a daft question about invoicing and freelancing then maybe you will get some sympathy and guidance(or epic ribbing)from the forum.
Cheers
