if anyone knows other good places to donate that will relieve the immediate emergency, add them.
feel so helpless.curiously, my donation triggered my first automated fraud-protection call from the credit card...

Everyone should buy Japanese products to help their economy recover: Shimano, Toyota, Sony, Hello Kitty etc.

Also looks like the Japan Centre is also taking donations alongside website orders via a coupon you can add to your order.

I thought we all did that anyway.

3rd largest economy in the world.
terrible scenes of devastation but the situation in Haiti (ranked 139th GDP, (below zimbabwe)) is still desperate, don't hesitate to donate to Japan but don't forget Haiti. -

There does seem to be a large difference in wealth in the people of those countries. I realise this is a widespread thing across the world but chin/japan seem to be more so. They have all these fancy earthquake resistant tower blocks but then the general housing is nowhere near the same standards

Japan is capable of dealing with this situation without the, relatively, minor funds that will be raised through appeals. Many other places in the world are not. Think about where in the world your money will do the most good; in Japan it is unlikely it will actually save lives. In Haiti, as Mr Smyth mentioned, it will. And in many other places too.

My great grandfather was a Japanese POW and I'd still say you deserve a solid punch in your face for a comment like that. Same too to those who mention Pearl Harbor.

I disagree. Japan will rebuild and recover, it is one of the most capable countries of doing so, rebuilding is something they do well. If we are only talking long-term economic aid, I agree - put it elsewhere.
However right now, huge areas of the country are without water, food, electricity or fuel. Access is difficult, districts are yet to be reached. Thousands have already died, but more will die in the next few days and weeks. Water and food-aid, medical supplies, search&rescue and access can save lives.
It's cold there, even blankets help. It might be that they can fix up their infrastructure enough (while dealing with nuclear issues) to get water supplies working again, but the next few days might show that air-drops are needed. I can't imagine that however well prepared they are, humanitarian aid isn't also desperately needed. I don't know what they have and what they need, but it's a critical time, I think even minor assistance can save lives.

There must be a time when we can put things behind us, and still be charitable. It is my belief that it makes us better people, to help others.
Good on any of you that choose to help.

As you may all know by now, its expected that the magnitude 10 earthquake that hit Japan may have caused the loss of many hundreds, and very possibly thousands of people. That was the effect the tsunami had. The Japanese nuclear reactors are now the greatest concern, as two may be in danger of failing.
Whether you have a connection to Japan or not, at least consider if you might wish to contribute to the aid and rescue efforts in some way.
The British Red Cross has launched an appeal, and that has been sanctioned by the Japan Embassy in the UK.
The International Red Cross have also launched an appeal, and as they are a separate organisation, I'm posting their linked page as well.
The American Red Cross also have an appeal, and could be used by any of our American forum members.
Disaster In Japan
If anyone thinks of anything we can do as community that might be appropriate, then all ideas would be welcome.
Maybe a group fund-raising drive or something?
