ruined.
Way to rain on someone's good day out.
No experience of MTB on the chase, but the road's over the chase have one of the best '30' signs ever, and the cafe on the canal at Great Haywood serves the best teacakes in the world

i think they were sharing a hotel room....
not ridden at cannock, the follow the dog trail is meant to be a good'n

Sorry for stating the obvious.
Cannock is a mess, proper example of how not to treat a trail.
I'd rather hire a car out of my own pocket, crash on a floor rather than invite friends to that place.
Harsh , but true.

Did it as my first "real" mtb ride, on a cheap halfrauds bike. Found it fun, but dont think any real mtb'ers would even consider it off-roading.

I used to enjoy going up there before/after work, but that was 2006. It wasn't that amazing back then but it was fun and considering it was only a 20 minute drive from where I lived, I never complained. Has it become that much worse in the last 5 years?

I just watched a few videos on youtube. I stand by my comment, its just like a windey canal towpath.
-
• #16
It's way better than a windy canal path. It's not as good as Wales, but it doesn't have the height differential or bedrock, so it does get cut up by amateurs. In my opinion it's the best 'local' mtbing place. If you want to make it harder, go faster!
I much prefer trail centres to natural stuff, because I want a high proportion of technical riding without stupid ramblers or horses getting in my way, but there's also a load of good 'off-piste' stuff there if you get a local to show you.

Wales is the mecca, im lucky to have a mate i can crash at, drink beer, and borrow his bike (borrowed before beer)
Such a shame about cannock, some of those lovely, pefectly crafted berms ruined...braking bumps? More like someone equipped a spade and went to work. Mutilated.....
Its a far cry than when they opened the new stuff...and watching people complain about braking bumps whilst skidding...noooooooooooooooooooo!!!
mtbers i ride with on a saturday have boycotted it...we go up clent hills now as someone has been digging in a hidden spot...and sandwell valley, old mountain mayhem course...spot on.

I saw a guy with a boxer tattoo'd on his leg by the cafe.. There were also lots of dirty old men too!

There is more to the Chase than Follow Your DaD and The Monkey Trail. Both were good trails but over use and loads of brake bumps have spoiled the trail. You have to remember that though most of the Dog and Monkey were part funded by the Forrestry Comission and built by Hugh Clixby. There is a huge help from Volunteers who give / gave up time to help build and maintain these two trails. There is more to Cannock Chase than these two trails alone. There are loads of hidden cheeky trails all over.
The Chase is my local forrest where I ride two or three times a week. As said above it is no Wales but for where it is there is enough to keep you going. -

The grant that Gwynedd are recieved last year should reap wonders...interesting plans indeed ;)
Dh runs carved in to FFesttionog (sp) and link ups cross country to Llandegna and Coed...
Now thats a few days riding indeed.
Went to Cannock Chase with my Dad and Brother today and had the most fun i've ever had on a bicycle EVER!
I borrowed my mates bike and it felt like a tank! It's weird being able to coast too!
Here's a video I found on Youtube.

The end.
