This Saturday?
-

Yes. There's been a recce and planning and everything...

yeah yeah. I meant to update this ages ago but the lack of enthusiasm and general lethargy led to my procrastination.
I've actually double booked myself for this, I'm supposed to meet an old friend in putney that evening. I can do the first part but will have to peel off depending on what time we start. I think the montague opens at 1930ish so if we want to include it, and I think we should, we'll need to get there for that time. I've never been during opening hours and no one who suggested it has any idea when it's open...I'm guessing around 730-8.
Fox and rhowe have done the route I'd planned before so will probably be ok...I can pass on notes/info in the afternoon.
My suggestion:
Saturday 19th March. Meet 2pm, LMNH.
Pub stop 1: The Oakdale, N4
Pub stop 2*: Island Queen, N1
Pub stop 3: The Toucan, W1
Pub stop 4: The Grenadier, SW1
Pub stop 5: The Old Red Lion
Pub stop 6: The Montague, Se14
Pub stop 7*: The George, SE1*Pub 2: We ideally need something quirky in the islington/ clerkenwell are to break up the otherwise long slog to the toucan. Someone please suggest something that they have experience of! Preferably that is open on a saturday afternoon. Otherwise I have a couple of suggestions which are not really in that area. But I like the route and I'm sure we can find something. Edit: Fox suggest Island Queen. It's in...
**Pub 5: This was the price of wales - included because it was kind of en route...there is te red lion (?) in kennington we could replace it with, or the Jolly Gardeners, a german pub round the corner which is apparently nice, but pricey. I've also always liked the look of the toulouse-lautrec up the roasd, but have never been.
***Pub 7: I suggest we take the safe option and hit The George as the Gladstone felt a bit forced (motorised spinning instruments?). Or the Rake. Or the Mug house. There is plenty around that area.
Here's the route we took - roughly 25 miles.

And there is not a chance that we did 700 feet of climbing.

Ha, no way. I'm going to a gig that evening (in West Norwood library, of all places) so I won't be able to stay into the evening either.
I can't think of any quirky pubs on that stretch from Haringay to Soho, except Filthy McNasty's which is actually on Amwell St and a bit of an institution, although not really quirky.
The Island Queen in Angel is not far off though and architectually amazing, if not quirky per se:
http://www.timeout.com/london/bars/venue/2:14971/island-queenAnd it used to be a damn nice pub, hopefully still is. I vote detour there.
I also think we should start earlier than 2, personally.

But then the montague won't be open, Fox...
On the plus side, the weather is looking glorious for saturday.

I don't think the Montague will get going till later, it looks like that kind of place. Given we can't make it later I don't know how well it's going to work.
It's a shame, especially given the amazing review below, but an earlier start would work better for anyone who's got Saturday night plans.
We could really do with finding out what time it opens. I can try and ring them tonight.
An amazing little pub, apparently voted one of the best in Britain- I wouldn't be surprised; inside there is a carriage with a stuffed zebra's head in it. And you can play scrabble or any one of the hundreds of board games strewn around the pub.
The owners are a little old couple who look like ghosts (!) and are really lovely to chat too. You can really tell that the pub has been theirs for a long time, and that they are unwilling to ever sell out. Always bustling, and even if it isn't the atmosphere is unique; quirky and a bit spooky. I have been there for band nights, burlesque nights, rowdy nights and quiet nights and it has always been an endearing place to go to.
Drink prices are average, and there is a huge selection of beers and ales in keeping with the pub ethics. Really bizarre little place, but one that will stick in your memory and one you will want to return to!

It's only open friday, saturday and sunday. Only evenings on friday and saturday (7 onwards), but they do sunday lunches.

Ok, so let's stick to 2pm. This makes sense really. The OP needs to be updated. I'll PM hoefla.
It should say:
Saturday 19th March. Meet 2pm, LMNH.
Ride up to Harringey for the Oakdale's last day, then on to a few of London's other more curious public houses:
Pub stop 1: The Oakdale, N4
Pub stop 2: Island Queen, N1
Pub stop 3: The Toucan, W1
Pub stop 4: The Grenadier, SW1
Pub stop 5: The Old Red Lion
Pub stop 6: The Montague, Se14
Pub stop 7: The George, SE1About 25 miles, with pubs, and the sun is going to be out. You should be all over this!
