  • Been offered this by a friend. How much do you think its worth? Its 853 tubing with full 9 speed Dura ace, price £400,cheers.

  • sigh does it fit you?

On paper it sounds good (is the DA with sti's or downtube shifters?), but it's worth nothing to you if it's too big/small

  • It's worth £400, apparently.

  • Sti's,and its the right size as i'm a short a**e lol

  • small frame

  • I'm happy to say it's worth £350.

Get someone else to do the same and you can link him to this thread and say, "sorry but a few people have said it's only worth £350."

  • saw this on retrobike. reckon £350 is pretty much spot on.

  • yeah £350 is probably right

  • Cool. Shall I edit my first post now?

  • ^and that one too :)

  • Does this sale have anything to do with the 5th floor?
    Easy...

  • An 853 frame in good nick in my size with a top-end groupset (even if it isn't a patch on Campag).
Yeah, I'd pay £400 if I was in the market.

Or £350 if it helps :-)

What is it about 90s bikes and mismatched black stems, and camo bartape?

  • I like that. I've a soft spot for CXP 30 rims too.

But with that annoying saddle angle I could'nt go over £350.

  • yeah £300-£350 is about right

  • Did he ask what it was worth to him or did he ask what it was worth?

It's always worth pointing out to people that ask these questions that they need to check the size.

Sorry for my pettiness, but there is such a thing as 'market value', which is what people normally mean when they ask 'what is something worth'. Market value is a fair price which is what you could reasonably expect to sell something for give or take 5 or 10%. .... reasonable question.

    Yes it is reasonable.

But a search of google to find out the grade of the tubing, and groupset, followed by looking at the finished listings in ebay would have given him the answer... probably. Plus if the seller's his friend he is in a better position to make a judgement on the condition of the bike.

The problem is, that we all know that older stuff has fluctuating demand. There is more than a 5-10% margin. No one wants to buy 2nd alu frames, so they're not worth much any more.

2 years ago, before bike brands started putting trackends on their bikes, any converatable lugged steel road frame was worth at least £70 and somewhere above £120 if it was 531 and in a good colour. If you had a steel bike with track ends, then you could ask any stupid number. Now you can't (thank God).

I predict a backlash and a sudden dearth of vintage stuff, now lots of people are bored of cycling or have realised that they'd rather go for modern components.

I still stand by my £350 valuation.

  • I'd buy it, split it and move the groupset on something nicer.

  • I'd say the frame was probably pretty nice if it's 853 throughout. No?

  • What is it about 90s bikes and mismatched black stems, and camo bartape?

if you have to ask, you'll never understand...

  • Cheers for the answers, just didn't want to pay over the odds.Better get haggling.

  • I'd say the frame was probably pretty nice if it's 853 throughout. No?

    No.

  • No.

    Nicer than that Columbus stuff

  • Do all Ilkeston frames begin with SB,as this is frame No G38159?

  • I was told it was Ilkeston built !
