  • A friend is looking for independent bookstores in London that would be interested in stocking his self-published book (already doing brisk trade in NYC) and I figured this is as good a reason as any to start a thread about independent bookstores. Gotta be enough people interested to list the bookstores they like going to.

I like Chener Books on Lordship Lane.

  • this place?

  • i like the second hand bookshop on stoke newington church street, mostly because the guy behind the counter is a dead ringer for uncle monty from withnail and I

  • Stoke Newington Books on stoke newington high street is pretty good. Lots of subjects covered. The shop sign is incredible too... a proper typographic motorway pile-up.

  • Here's on of my favourites.

Not London, but Robin Hoods Bay. Great little place for picking up ratty paperbacks.

  • Hatchard of Piccadilly or Daunt Books of Holland Park.

    Excellent bookstores!

  • Brixton end of Coldharbour Lane, next to the Phoenix... All secondhand AFAIK... My mate Rob has worked in here for years... Great little shop...

  • ^that looks great ts. bonus points if thats the shop mutt

  • No love for...

  • There used to be three in Islington and then along came Waterstones and Borders and now we only have Waterstones.

  • Slain, totally! I rode by there last week and was like, "WHoa! Never seen that before!"

Thanks for the ideas, peeps! He's going to need shops that sell new books though, too.

  • If he's already selling in NYC has he thought of getting in on Powells in Portland, OR?

Biggest and most awesome bookshop known to man

  • All about primrose books in primrose hill

A store is not a shop. What do you amaericans call a store? Where one stores things?

  • Daunt Books Excellent bookstores!

All Daunt Books are great for getting high off the glue!

  • Lion & Unicorn in RIchmond

  • Housmans, up Kings Cross. Shabby and shambolic. Specialises in leftist politics and social/cultural theory, been to a few talks there, plotting and scheming amongst my fellow lumpen proles, let me bring my own beer inside.

Depository, except this makes it all weird and confusing like a Gordian Knot of transatlantic reading matter commerce/storage

  • Freedom Press Bookshop in Aldgate, if the subject matter is appropriate...

The indy shop on Brick Lane seems good. Brick Lane Books or some other imaginative name.

  • Queens Park Books is one of my favourite bookshops in London.

Always have great stock, and space for local / independent authors.

It helps that i only live 30 seconds away from the place, but it is particularly good, with very knowledgeable and approachable staff.

Nice people. Full of cunts on the street outside though.

  • Pages. Lower Clapton Road. Great little store.

And if something is on offer does that mean I get to tell them the price I'd like to pay for the item? #skullybaiting

  • Also, we store things in storage units!
