Rossin Columbus SLX f+f, or not..?

  • Thanks to those who've offered to help identify if my BLB Rossin f&f is actually an authentic Rossin, and if it is, what model it is. Those who have approached me about buying the frame since Friday's debacle, may want to hang ten...

As per Velocio's recommendation, I've taken some photos of the drop-outs, seat post cluster, top of forks, bottom bracket casing and where top tube meets head tube etc.

The closer I look, the more I suspect it's a respray. Buyer beware rings louder and louder...

On the fork drop outs 'Brevi Campagnolo' is debossed. The number '57' is readable along with 'SLX' on the underside of the bottom bracket housing.

I'm going back into BLB as one of the titanium rails on the yellow Selle saddle has snapped. Took it back in to Jan and Malchek, who sold me another saddle and said to come back in with my receipt and they'll send the broken saddle back to Selle.

Any help much appreciated, especially if this turns out to be a dud.

  • Rear drop outs. 'GIPIEMME' is debossed on the r/h drop out. Tiny pinkish-red specs coming through from stone chip marks. Looks increasingly ominous to me.

  • There's a lot of 'Rossin' decal sets on ebay, along with 'Columbus steel' stickers, so a respray is not out of the question.

Why would a wheel manufacturer have it's name stamped on the drop outs, does anyone know if Gipiemme ever made frames?

Can't see any other frame number. Bikeforums.net does have some further info about identifying Rossins, which is certainly helping to cast a little more light.

    Cheers.

  • It's most certainly not a Pista Super Record, that's a track frame, (thank you for the education).

  • As far a I'm aware GIPIEMME never made frames, but certainly made drop outs.
Colnago and Bianchi have used them at various stages.

  • Gipiemme made a range of good quality bike componements, as far as I know they were often used interchageably with Campag stuff. Almost all frame builders use pre-cast drop outs/lugs/BB shells (thus the amount of non Cinelli bikes with Cinelli BB shells). For what it's worth, re-spray or not, it must be a Rossin - nobody would go to the trouble of retrofitting a pantographed seat tube cluster...

The rear dropouts are Gipiemme. The whole frame looks definitely repainted.
    Forks from a different model.

Campag do a lot of drop outs for higher end bikes. Front and rear,
As do Gipemme / Nervex they also make lugs but as far as I know they don't manufacture frames
Frame builders will buy BB's / lugs / dropouts from other manufacturers and put the bits together under their name

Taking this as far as it can go Reynolds / Columbus make the tubing but are not frame manufacturers

  • What precious little I know/can tell, I'm thinking it's a resprayed 'Rossin Record'.

  • ^ doesn't seem to be the same seat cluster

  • Damn, I feel like the male version of Reese Witherspoon's character in 'Legally Blonde'.

Thank you, that's massively helpful. Most certainly had NO idea that most manufacturers use pre-cast drop outs/lugs/BB shells.

£529 for a resprayed frame with mismatched forks is making uneasy. Doesn't take a genius to figure it's value is seriously undermined.

Good spot, and the head tube/down tube has an 'R' cut-out. No doubt details like this changed with each updated frame.

    Thanks.

  • The SLX tubing is Columbus' high end tubing, so least you did have a quality frame.

Not sure why it has Campag front, and Gipemme rear, drop outs though.

  • I've just been looking at those brakes...
They don't look like veloce skeleton brake calipers to me, they look like the ordinary back veloces.

The reason I say this, you've been charged skeleton prices on your receipt - the standard veloces retail for about thirty quid.

God dammit, why am i finding it hard to be surprised now...thanks, looking into it.

Yep, the sticker is definitely original. Probably it was bought NOS.

  • the frame stamped as SLX so I assumed the sticker is correct for the frame.

  • looking at the seat cluster ,it looks like rossin is stamped into the frame..if it is and my old eyes are working properly then its a rossin

  • it is

  • So.......

Defo SLX - Stamped on frame
Defo Rossin - Stamped on steat cluster.

    Ist this resolved yet?

  • A Columbus SLX Rossin with new paint (NOS or not) is a bloody nice bike. Maybe not £540 worth but you could expect to pay somewhere around the £300 mark if you knew where to look. £540 to have it off the shelf in a shop is perhaps a little steep but by no means a total rip off.

Those brakes though.... that's borderline theft and I'd be fucking furious.

    £50 for a chain? Jebus...

  • Further photos to validate it's a respray. Talking with Malchek at BLB to see where we go from here.
