Benotto frame failures?

Posted on
  • how common is it with Mexican made Benottos for the seat tube to crack at the bottom bracket lug? just bought a Modelo 1700 track frame thats in near mint cond and I was hoping to use it for training on and off the track so I need to know if Im taking a risk here.

seatpost size is 26.6mm which indicates Columbus Zeta tubing(no decal), the bottom bracket has a full heart shape cutout, think it was built in 1981 from the bb stamp

If it does crack how easy/safe is it to fix and is that the only potential frame failure?

There's a whole thread here about cracking frames as you describe.

If you have bought the frame and its fine then just use it.

I had a zeta Benotto in the eighties and it was fine.

If it cracks at the bottom bracket it can be fixed but it is a large job to fix as the builder would be heating an area with a lot of tube junctions which is going to weaken the existing welds in that area and probably not worth doing as its only zeta tubing.

  • I read that thread already, theres not much else online about it but the guy in that thread seems to think it effects all of the frames produced (except 2 models) so Im wondering why theres not much else about it online.

It might only be Zeta tubing but it has very nice tight frame angles, the chain stays are very short.
my 110kg bodyweight also concerns me, that bottom bracket shell is going to take alot of abuse.

  • Were the mexican ones only for US sale? What he said might not apply to european ones unless they outsourced all the frame building.

  • Im not sure if they sent mexican frames to europe. the list of frames effected doesnt mention the track models, also found a few people online who raced on them with no problems. 1 guy bought his frame from the mexican factory and used it for a few seasons. he still uses it now but on the road with brakes and mudguards!

Im more hopefull now. dont know if the bottom bracket lugs for the track frames make any difference.
