I do knitting! I've also got a really simple knitting pattern for a hat that's easy for beginners...will look it up tonight and tell you what size needles you need. What sort of hat do you want to make?
There's also a knitting workshop at LMNH if you're based in London...would be happy to teach people too if there's demand?

My cousin was doing a hat at the weekend. Chunky cable knit thing. She's only been knitting for a few weeks. Whopping needles - 3 of them to knit a tube, seemed to be coming along quite quick. Did occur to me that it could be a right mess if you were a bit pissed and not counting properly though...

How strange... I was just thinking about starting knitting too... the other half's mother is popping down at the weekend to give me a tutorial and some needles... (also, why am I somewhat embarrassed to admit this?)

It's really good for the mind though. I cant knit anything else than a scarf but I like how 'calm' I feel.

i fucken love home knitted stuff. Got 4 sweaters my girlfriends grandma has knitted for me, + numerous hats and mittens, she's like a machine.
I thought that fleece and other plastic stuff was allright but after wearing home knitted stuff of top quality yarn, that fits perfectly, there's no going back.
I just wish my girlfriend could learn it too so I'd be covered for life

i think there is an underground of knitters out there.. the best thing about making your own stuff.. its your style.. those one-off pieces unique / mod like.. this all kicked off just before christmas.. my youngest wanted a pair of mitts from H&M.. grey with a cable, after searching the west end i realised that knitware and cables are so in at the mo..
anyway H&M they had sold out and she didn't want any other colour.. so i went to the only shop i knew that had the gear.. libertys by regent street.. searched a few places on-line like ravelry.. and worked it out from there, things haven't changed much but the merino wool/kid mohair yarn i used was quality
okay so the mitts are a bit wonky, the cuffs are baggy, the thumbs are tight but Skye loves them.. only because i made them for her.. sounds a bit like bagpuss lol
i had wool left over, so thought why not a hat.. nothing since

Is there anyone out there who wants to knit me a beard?
Could do with it for the weekend and can pay in bike parts, beer, money, as long as it's cheaper than this
http://www.bargainboards.co.uk/P/Neff_BEARDO_Detachable_Face_Mask_Beanie_One_Size_Maroon-(40071).aspxCouldn't find any patterns but this might help?
Mousey brown would be awesome. :)Knitted beards. Get some.

Massive dredge but I recently got back into knitting. It's really relaxing. Anyone else into it?
Knitted some Xmas presents (hats, scarves) and currently a scarf for my wife and a blanket (bought a massive amount of cheap yarn in the sale from Hobbycraft).

I have access to a load of wool, but can't knit. Can learn of course.
The effort/reward ratio seems a bit off though which is why I've not yet bothered.
How long does it take you to make a scarf?A knitting machine would be good.

Looking at it with an economically minded head it's completely bonkers of course. Wool is relatively expensive and if I were to sell something I'd made looking to get at least minimum wage I would never sell anything.
How long is a piece of .. yarn? :D It totally depends on thickness of wool (and needle size), and the pattern, i.e. how time consuming it is getting stitches and/or patterns right. The scarf I'm knitting at the moment uses the so-called Star Stitch - looks beautiful but uses a shedload of wool and is slow. But then I don't care about how long it takes. The reward is to a good part in the making.
That said I'd love a knitting machine too :)
Edit:
Here's a link explaining star stitch (knitted): https://www.knittingkingdom.com/star-stitch-free-knitting-pattern/
And that's how the scarf looks like in progress:

I tried to learn from my mother-in-law once. She was not a good teacher.

I took it up ~3 years ago, have got moderately alright at it. Am trying to learn some of the more complex things now.
I used a nice super bulky yarn to make a blanket and then backed it with sherpa fleece, and it's been very useful over the winter. It took me two years to finish it (I didn't work continuously) and my gauge changed over time so the top end is about 6 inches smaller than the bottom end.
Your scarf looks great! Are those Symphony circulars interchangeable?

Your blanket sounds just right for the weather. I've been a bit stupid and started with a thinner yarn on 6mm needles, so I'll be a while.
Thanks! The needles in the photo are KnitPro interchangeables. They are really nice with wooden tips, but faithful to the n+1 rule I've ordered a set of Chiaogoo Twist Red Lace interchangeables, phwooar.

It's a good time of year to start something that'll take a while, plenty of winter left yet.
How are you finding the interchangeables? I splashed out on a set of metal KnitPro Zings for my birthday, but the screws keep coming undone while I'm working and it's driving me nuts. I just finished a headwarmer in a really thin cashmere blend on 4mm needles, and it kept getting caught as the interchangeable bits loosened. It was really stressing me out, so I've been idly wondering if the Symfonie ones like yours might be better. But I forgot they're made by the same company as mine, so maybe they have the same problem.
Post an update when you get the Chiaogoo ones, they look fancy af!

Really love them, but I had the same thing happening at the beginning. I'd say it was more of an issue on a smaller cable, maybe any twisting of the tips has more of an effect then. I just make sure I screw the tips on as tight as possible.
I'll be happy if I finish the blanket ready for next winter! Priority is the scarf at the moment.
Anyone knit?
I want to learn.
I need to know what size needles are ideal to learn with, gonna go and make a scarf Nd hat combo.
Got knitting for dummies on order in the library.
