Wanted: Shimano dura ace 7400

  • Long time (ideal) project that will end up attached to Eddy Merckx seven 11, motorola 58cm (also looking for) got absolutely nothing yet of either, looking for good condition or NOS happy to pick up where and when as prob be a long time project and happy to wait for right piece in right condition. Was a campy lover but think this groupset is the sex....

  • Got a Set of 7410 Crank Arms, 170mm, Mint Condition.

35 of your finesh english pounds and they can be yours!

  • Cheers but being horribly selective for this build for once will buy what I actually want rather than lots of nice stuff that doesn't go together.

  • No Worries, You know where theres a set if you ever need them!

  • Cheers but being horribly selective for this build for once will buy what I actually want rather than lots of nice stuff that doesn't go together.

If you're being that selective you might want to specify exactly what Dura Ace 74XX you want...

    e.g. FC-7400 or FC-7402 cranks?

  • Yes suppose, I know I like the 7400 cranks that are more square in style but as I said know more about campag than dura ace, maybe 7402 as a mix? What would be the the best mix of the 74xx,
Don't want ergos and quite like non aero brakes,

  • Both of those are the squarer type, just different periods of time, the 7400s were 85-88 and the 7402s were 90/91. Are you going for a particular time period?

  • You might find this helpful, I think it starts in '85 (don't quote me on that though, it definitely finishes '97):

Of course if you're happy to mix and match various shades of 7400 based on preference that will be easier and probably cheaper, but if you have a frame and want matching period correct bits this should help.

  • Like the Op Erik thought I was after 7400, as that's what I've seen and like. Having said that when I say Seven 11 Merckx that must be 7402? As that's 91 onwards..? Besides that still love the 7400 gruppo, what ideally I want is an eddy Merckx of that era with dura ace 74xx? got one kicking around? ; )

  • I have a complete 7402 groupset minus headset, so brakeset with white hoods, cranks, BB, F&R mechs, 8spd downtube index shifters, 36H hubs built onto Ambrosio silver rims (like OpenPros), 27.2mm seatpost.... PM if interested.

  • That sounds perfect ^

    I wish ;)

Thing is Shimano swapped out individual bits as time went on, increasing the number of different group combinations. The cranks are a good example, my Colnago is somewhere in the period of early-mid 90s, so I thought for a bit that the 7410 cranks weren't correct. But they are correct from 91/92 onwards in what I would call 7402/7403 gruppos (if that makes sense, Shimano never called them that). 7410 had the 7402 rear mech until '96 and downtube shifters until '98 if you didn't go for the STIs, 7401 chains were used up to '96.

So your Merx if it is '91 onwards would probably have had 7410 cranks, but if it was a '91 could have had the last of the 7402s, but what I think I'm trying to say is as long as the bits are right for the timescale it's ok. I think!

  • I've got some DA 7402 brake calipers in superb condition, though not original Pads.
    PM me if of interest

  • Erik,I don't even have a Merckx yet! So just putting my dura ace ideals out there to start with, sounds complicated when I think I know campag, and dura ace is new to me.. By the way bought a gazelle frame off you 3.5 years ago, my first fixed, then my brothers, Then his mates...Dutch loving!!

  • Just found this, very helpful as it's a database of Dura Ace with pics and dates:
    http://velobase.com/ViewGroup.aspx?GroupID=39a19876-a37a-4d36-bf31-f592f8dcf118

Dura Ace is also new to me, but I've been reading about it for the last week having picked up said Colnago with a DA 7402/7410 gruppo.

  • I'm don't claim to be an expert on Shimano/DA, but my understanding is that 74xx series covers a number of iterations of DA over the years, and some parts remained essentially the same, however the key difference was the transition from 6 to 7 and ultimately 8spd as follows:
    7400 6spd 1985-88
    7401 7spd 1987-88
    7402 8spd 1989-96
all above downtube shifters, then in parallel with:
    8spd STIs 91-96
1997 saw the introduction of 7700 (9spd). Obviously the years are a rough guide as with all these things there is some overlap.

  • Thanks for the info retro, basically looking for a dream Merckx frame in 58 and then best DA 7*** didn't know it was so complecated,

  • Got a Set of 7410 Crank Arms, 170mm, Mint Condition.

35 of your finesh english pounds and they can be yours!

Probably the only set of Dura Ace cranks I actually like [/campagfan].
