  • Hey guys - I wanna put on a big alleycat event in Brighton in the spring for a bit of fun but also to promote The Rising Bikes.

I'm gunna offer one of my frames as first prize - either have one ready or make a custom one after the event.

I'll also provide loads of other prizes to make it a real good event to do.

I got a good idea for the format and want to use the checkpoints to show the best of Brighton. I'll sort out a pub/venue to put on a BBQ, some arty bike films and have a party at after. Ideally I wanna make an edit of the day to use as promotion on blogs and shit but mainly to have a good day.

It'd be really good if all of you guys could make it, and even better if we can drag people in from all over the country to show that the fgss scene isn't limited to London

    So...
Let me know if you are interested in taking part / manning a checkpoint / helping out in general
If any artists/filmakers/musicians want to get involved it could be quite exciting

I'm thinking April/May - if it's a success then I'd love to put on more events in the summer
What dates are gunna be best? When are students around and what other events might it clash with?
Anyone suggest a good bike friendly afterparty venue?

Hopefully we can make this a siiiick event and get everyone involved!

    Robin

  • Odt!

  • Great idea man, i guess i will be getting a bamboo bike after all!
I was throwing some ideas around a few months back about having a bike film/art related party somewhere in town, most likely the cowley club on London Road. I think that it would be a really good venue to have such an event, i could help you organise that side of things if you like?

  • yeah sick danny! bout time we had something like that here. Could be in with a chance for the frame as it'd be unfair for me to enter and all...

  • I'm definitely on getting involved with organising something. Would be nice to do a polo demo somewhere too, raise the profile of that as well.

  • Yeah definitely, could maybe get a road shut off like outside the fiddlers to do a polo comp

  • I'm definitely on getting involved with organising something. Would be nice to do a polo demo somewhere too, raise the profile of that as well.

Pop up court in jubilee square would be the best. get london involved, call the council

  • I'm up for this, I don't mind shooting the event if you want photos for the blog and future promotion?

  • We could get a bit of money from the Brighton Students Union if I get a funding bid together.

Shall we set a preliminary date so we get our acts together.

  • Yeah, I'm thinking april/may
    but not mayday weekend
Chris_tim - yeah cool, I wanna get someone to get loads of footage for promo use etc too

IdealStandard - Maybe uni money could go towards some proper polo shit (balls, boards and more mallets)? You wanna get on the polo tourney case? Have a word with jubilee square management?

When is are the Easter holidays this year? What other events are on at the same time? Could it be a wise move to have it the same weekend as the great escape - more going on to attract more people and also we could tie in with their advertising maybe?

I got some plans and also some sponsors with any luck

    So-
Alleycat - in and around Brighton (I'm gunna piss myself with excitement if my route comes together!)
Polo comp - Jubilee square with any luck
Films and art - Cowley club but maybe worth a look at the wagon and horses or upstairs of the mash tun if we are using jubilee square for polo?
BBQ - Jubilee square or film/art venue?
Party! - Mash Tun? Cowley Club? Elsewhere?

  • In relation to polo get onto the guys at the LHBPA they will have some good contacts and advice for organising something like this i'm sure

  • Also dont publicise the alleycat aside from on forums etc. They have gotten some really bad press of late and if you link it to an event that you are trying to get funding/council approval for you are likely to be given short shrift.

My advice would be to centre it around the film/art/polo angle, like a mini BFF for brighton. Alleycats will get us nowhere. Not saying we shouldnt do one though, they are awesome.

  • Cheers Rich

  • To make it even more exciting I'm gunna include a bike film competition - with some big prizes for the best bike film and a showing of all the entries in the evening of the event.

Max 5 minute bike related film shot in any format but must be submitted in digital format for judging before the event

Will get onto the council asap about jubilee sq and funding etc - get this rolling!

  • I'll try and get Birmingham and Coventry on this

  • First meeting on Sunday 9th Of Jan after polo (5pm) at the Rosehill tavern.

    Things we'll be discussing:

    • Possible dates and timings
    • Who we need to get involved
    • What money we need and where this'll come from
    • Promotion and scope of entrants
    • Location for different parts of event
    • Designs, logos and names

Everyone start thinking about this now and on the 9th when the students are back we can really get things going.

  • err
I kinda got this under control,
just wanted a bit of input and some help setting it up nearer the time
I'm stoked if you guys wanna organize something different but I'll be honest - I want to put on this event to promote my business and raise money for a charity we work with as well as making it a great day for all of the Brighton crew and everyone else who comes down.
Obviously it'd be great to have as many people down as possible so spread the word when we know its 100% on

I got 2/3 possible venues for polo, putting together a sponsor pack to take to around a dozen potential sponsors at this time, I got logos, designs, names and all that jazz, I know how I'm going to promote it but when everything is concrete then any promotion is good promotion so maybe talk about it nearer the time? I'm just waiting to hear back from venues, insurance, sponsors and equipment hire to make sure it's feesable. The guys at london polo have been really helpful and pretty much given me all I need.
As soon as I know more and I'm at a stage where it's going to go ahead then I'll sit down with everyone and hash out the details.

  • Splinter Faction!

Either way, I'm willing to help.

  • Sounds great if you're willing to do the legwork I'm not one to complain.

If you're planning a polo tournament it would be cool to involve those of us who actually play polo in Brighton. We've worked quite hard to develop the scene this year and would appreciate being a part of 'goings on'.

In only said that in relation to you comment "IdealStandard - Maybe uni money could go towards some proper polo shit (balls, boards and more mallets)? You wanna get on the polo tourney case? Have a word with jubilee square management? " - If you're on it then no worries.

My offer of support still stands and the SU is up for being involved. It's all great stuff for fixed/cycling in Brighton.

  • Jubilee Square would be a great location but usually costs a fair wack to rent for an event. Its a prime commercial spot. But there might be ways round that if you pitch it right (charity/sport etc). Happy to help on that if needed.

I'm shit at polo but look forward to any races. Will try and persuade some of the OG fixie skidders to come down in their lycra.

  • Agreed.

I've been plotting the construction of a collapsible polo court and making that the normal summer spot.

  • A good place to do public screening is the globe pub as it's got a cinema down stairs which is good or the Caroline of Brunswick both are film ready. But if any help is needed I'd happily lend a hand. Liam

  • Also I know a few southampton players/riders to boost numbers.
