Track bars - an odd reaction??

  • I recently swapped some narrow riser bars for some Charge Bowl track bars, and for some reason, every now and then I reach to use brakes like the ones in the pic above... when in fact I have a single dirty harry lever near the stem.

Luckily this hasn't got me into too much bother yet.

Have I tapped into the ancient collective cycling psyche, making me have this odd impulse??

Or do I just need to focus more when I'm riding?

I have never used drop bars before, so this isn't some weird muscle memory thing.

  • Just install a proper brake hood on.

    And *maybe *a proper handlebar.

  • I don't get your point...

I am braking perfectly safely and in proper control as it is. I just get a milliseconds impulse...

  • Your natural instincts are clearly more intelligent than your sense of the aesthetic.

Squabs is right, proper drops and aero levers make more sense, give more hand positions and are more intuitive.

  • If you are actually using drops then instal proper brake levers.
And proper road bars, like Ed said.

  • I'm confused. You're reaching for brakes on drop bars you have never had, nor used before?

If so just carry on reaching for it mate.

  • ^ just beat me to it. Epic weirdness.

Please do not play god and encourage natural selection.

  • I cannot resist asking where's my brain, where's my brake?

  • I'm not asking for a advice here, I'm just stating an odd observation, which clearly non of you have experienced yourself.

  • By the way - is the bike FG or SS?

  • I like the fact that the charge bowl is considered as a track bar.

Might as well call the On-one Midge's a trackie warrior.

In that case, can you please donate £5 to the forum?

Well we had experienced this ourselves, expect it turn out there *is *something to grab after all.

  • Sorry

You did ask for advice "do I need to focus more?"

    And YES!

  • It's not muscle memory or collective psychedelic drug consciousness or whatever it was you said...

Or actually it is, it just isn't the way you think.

You are used to reaching out with your fingers and pulling back to stop, regardless of what bars you're using the hand action remains the same, you're just grabbing for the brakes then instantly thinking "oh yeah, drops..." then moving to the tops.

You'll probably hit the back of a taxi sooner or later, then actually buy some brake levers where your hands go.

  • Is it like when I wake up in the morning and need to scratch the leg that isn't there?

  • Is it like when I wake up in the morning and need to scratch the leg that wasn't there in the first place?

    fixed.

  • Sometimes I get a massive pain in my arse and realise I've just tried to sit on the bike that's actually still in the garage....

Reading this thread is like waking up in the morning and finding a severed horse's head in the bed.

    Sounds about right, tbh

Didn't think this thread would stir up this much interest, considering how brakeless riding seems to be accepted freely in most sites i've seen to do with fixed gear riding.

  • The old debate about brakeless riding and brainless riding.

RPM as track moderator should this not be in your section of the forum?

  • Sometimes I get a massive pain in my arse and realise I've just tried to sit on the bike that's actually still in the garage....

Sometimes I put my fist in my mouth and realise I didn't make my cheese toastie yet.
