here's a suggestion for you.
stop reminiscing about heavy old under-performing crap that you couldn't afford and lusted after as a youth and buy yourself a nice modern hardtal with forks that have proper damping (not just a squishy bit of plastic), a rebound nob that actually does something, disk brakes that work, geometry for proper mtb'ing and that doesn't weigh the same as a sack of spuds.just an idea, it may work out better in the long run.

You've kind of missed the point there.

I had a bottom of the range steel specialized hard-rock comp from about 6 years ago and it was soo good did quite a bit of touring on it. When it got stollen i replaced it with an alluminium MTB but it was really bendy with camping gear in panniers. I wish specialized still did them.

now that's just crazy talk
I know this is a roadbikeworld, and I'm a roadie first and foremost, but I am after a 1990s Specialised mountainbike: pref a Stumpjumper with front suspension (not a fully suspended bike).
I might consider something a little left field like a Roberts/whatever...
PM me with suggestions, bikes to buy.
Thanx, Roadking.
