Make Stoke Newington Two-way

  • Hackney Cyclists and other local groups are campaigning to return the Stoke Newington one-way gyratory to two-way operation. We have a dedicated web-site for the campaign here:

    http://www.stokenewingtontwoway.org.uk/

We want wholesale traffic reform in this area. Our case is stated in brief on that site, although lots more detail could be added. Apart from all the other benefits--making Stoke Newington a destination and more prosperous, enabling bus passengers to get off the bus and on a bus in the High Street itself--the benefits for cyclists are clear: no more detours around a large one-way gyratory, far less excessively speeding motor traffic to the end of the next queue, and fewer cyclists riding down the footway or against the flow.

Whether you agree or disagree with our campaign (and by all means discuss here), please fill in Hackney Council's survey. It's a long survey and will take a bit of your time, but it's also very worthy and well-designed. It's mainly meant for residents, but by all means fill it in if you have any kind of interest in the area. There is also a separate survey for businesses. Hackney's consultation page can be found here.

Stoke Newington currently seems to us to be the most realistically achievable location to return to two-way operation. Hopefully, if this is done, many more will follow.

Hackney Cyclists will be doing another stall outside the Post Office in Stoke Newington High Street (corner of Brooke Road) this Saturday (11th December), so if you happen to be in the area, say hello!

  • who is stoke Newington?

just kidding although I am not a local I am sure that Oliver has thought this through properly as always and this is no doubt a very sensible suggestion.

  • Hi Oliver, just a heads up, info on the consultation also here:

  • Thanks, guys.

Joe.S--how strange! I lazily didn't search and relied on the list of similar threads that came up when I entered my thread title but it wasn't in there. Maybe that only shows the five most recent threads?

Thanks, Jimbo--do discuss if you have any questions!

  • Olly is on a one-way street to Merge Town

  • While you're at it, oliver, get us a contraflow cycle lane on the one-way bit of Mare St please.

    Guilty! :)

  • You lose karma!

  • Read, agreed, signed, little questionnaire filled in, pimptacular.

  • You lose karma!

I feel that I am still in the black despite my numerous infringements.

  • Survery filled in, I won't venture up high st/church half the time cause I can't ride straight back.
Altough i have started skateboarding up and down more now to get around this.

  • While you're at it, oliver, get us a contraflow cycle lane on the one-way bit of Mare St please.

The plans for that look different--the idea is to route buses around the triangle of Dalston Lane and Amhurst Road and open the Narroway completely to pedestrians and cyclists. That one-way is the last remnant of the former Hackney Central one-way system, which was apparently partly (mostly) returned to two-way in 1987 or so.

  • Thanks to all who've filled in the survey!

Mike, it's perfectly understandable that people go contraflow, and it highlights one of the main problems with the gyratory. It has understandably always attracted a lot of attention over the years. I remember it being a topic of much conversation in Stoke Newington more than ten years ago.

People obviously shouldn't do it, but it's inevitable that some do--they always split into a couple of different choices when faced with such a phenomenon. Some obey the rules, others don't, still others find a kind of 'half-obeying the rules and half not' course of action. The rules here are obviously flawed and you never get universal agreement to flawed rules. (You never get universal agreement to better rules, either, but non-compliance tends to be less blatant.)

That's not to condone it, just to explain it. I can't count the number of times people have complained to me about footway cycling specifically in Stoke Newington. It's a problem that needs to be tackled at its root.

  • All filled out, thanks for the info Oliver.

  • Completed.

Being a local, it's a lot easier to drive around the one way system than cycle.

    Good work.

  • Completed.
Thanks to those whose hard work makes things happen. Special thanks to you Oliver, you are awesome; London, cyclists, and Stoke Newington are all very lucky to have someone like you!

  • Thanks very much, JLaw! I should, however, point out that there are lots of people working on this. I'm just the messenger. :)

  • How a civilised Stoke Newington street system might look...

Stoke Newington is too civilised. Everyone who there eminates smugness, if the one way system tempers this then I'm all for keeping it.

Indeed, as I may have covered with that bit there^, I feel I shouldn't pass up the opportunity to both praise you again as I was referring to you're general role on this forum and beyond which, I believe, benefits us all, and to give this a little bump.
