  • Just seen this on the Evening Standard website: http://bit.ly/hbtcMs

  • Good call, coshgirl. Don't know if you've seen this:

    http://www.lcc.org.uk/index.asp?PageID=2148

  • Sickening. HSE should investigate.

  • Ah, that explains why the whole of west london traffic was rammed on Tuesday night.
    Jesus.
    R.I.P. Japanese Businessman.

  • Shame about the lazy Journalism 'Waste firm very sorry after it kills two in 6 months'

Although Dennis Putz was jailed recently, Catriona was killed last year.

Still if it leads to more awareness about this company, maybe its a good thing.

  • True, but mere awareness is almost never a good thing. We need to see big changes in the way such firms operate. Dennis Putz' case is a case in point. We are currently campaigning determinedly along our five-point plan to really get haulage firms to take decisive steps to make their lorry movements safer. This worked for Cynthia Barlow's (who is now with RoadPeace) excellent campaigning following her daughter's tragic death.

  • A lorry crashed through the central reservation of the road in Chiswick, killing a passenger in a black cab travelling in the opposite direction.
The 44-year-old is being questioned on suspicion of death by dangerous driving, driving while unfit and possession of a controlled substance.

    Beyond frigging belief!

  • That's the story that the OP was referring to.

  • That's the story that the OP was referring to.

I know the original story didn't mention the controlled substance.

  • Sorry, just got that.

    Wonder what the substance was?

Back in the old days they used to give HG drivers speed to keep them awake.

  • They've removed all the comments beneath the original ES version of the story.

sOMEONE MUST HAVE COMPLAINED, ALTHOUGH IT WAS ALL PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE AND NO CHARGES HAVE BEEN LAID SO NOT SUB JUDICE.Whoops caps, sorry.

  • I do not understand, if there is such unemployment, how come firms hire people who are not fit for their job.
In what world do we live where a man previously convicted of driving offences is still a professional driver?

  • Not in all cases unfortunately the best of all possible worlds.

  • Some aspects have the flavour of pure venality.

  • Another Standard article on Thames Materials:

    http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard/article-23905321-waste-firm-very-sorry-after-its-lorries-kill-two-in-six-months.do

I suggested that article to the ES after the earlier story broke - I'm disappointed by the outcome.

Lazy and cowardly to say the least.

  • We really need a full investigation into how every link of the regulatory chain (police, HSA, VOSA, Transport Commisioner?) contributes to a system whereby a company which hires criminally dangerous drivers can stay in business.
