  • Some people seem to carry on as normal in winter - not me. I turn from an active, outdoors-exercising type - jogging, tennis, cycling and so on - into a wretched tubby slob who can't bear the idea of getting cold and wheezing through the icy air. I have worked at home for the past couple of days, and both days said to myself in the morning, "At lunchtime you will go for a run/swim/cycle," and of course 6:30pm rolls around and I've been staring at the computer all day.

So just now I popped on a ten minute song and proceeded to run up and down the stairs until it finished. Low and behold I am breathless and sweating, and I haven't left the house!

What are your tips for vigorous exercise in the home?

  • I once got drunk and danced on a coffee table for 8 hours straight, while i'm sure that burned a lot of calories i'm not sure it made that much of a dent in the 3000+ calories in alcohol that i'd consumed in the hours leading up to it.

  • all you will ever need in this life (oooooh, deep)
    and dancing (drunk or otherwise)

    whats that called Oli, fingasana?

  • I don't know, I just know that I keep my shoulder blades down. :)

  • Winter is good for walking.

When its cold its hard to get started on the old bike. Your tempted to put lots of layers of coats on, even though after 15 minutes your will eventually start sweating buckets. Its similar for running, if you are prone to getting wheezy running in the icy cold air is also no fun and also begging for chest infections.

Walking however is a much more civilised affair. Stick some nice warm clothes on and briskly walk to a destination, this could even be a gym or swimming pool. Or even to the shops. Then walk back. Brilliant.

  • Luckily I have a prefect body and am the best cyclist in Europe, possibly the world. So, I can cook and drink loads of nice stuff with no ill effects at all, for the whole winter. Howver, my friend puts 1 hour of pumpin' music on his iSpod and runs up and down the stairs at in his flats 3 times as week.

  • shake 'n' vac

    You could says the same to bicycle as well, just take it easy, nice and slow and you'll get there;

    Just remember not to lean.

Could you please explain the mechanism by which chest infections are more likely to take hold in cold weather.

  • Masturbation burns quite a few calories, not really a team sport though.

Tommy, tommy, tommy, you should know better than to question Dr Fanny Pack.

    Unless you're into watching tornados.

    No gay stuff though.

    You're doing it wrong.

Your nose doesnt function so well as a bacteria filter in cold weather.

I've also heard of a minimum temperature, where exercise, causes the body more harm then good.

  • After several years of conforming to the local winter norm, packing away my running shoes, and reducing cycling to transport needs only. Getting my exercise from occasional cross country skiing, snow boarding etc. as well as putting in a lot of roller time.

A couple of years ago I decided to ignore winter, as winter sports require too much preparation, and just carry on regardless.

I'm planning on going for a 10km jog tonight. It'll be -7, it'll be very dark, but sitting in front of the fire place with a recovery drink (malt whisky) will be heavenly.

  • What's your commute distance SF?
