Really don't think rewelding your d-lock is a good idea if you want to keep you bike. The weld is going to be a weak point. A theif put's a lever in the lock and that is where it's most likely to snap.

True. But a lock is primarily a device to deter thieves. I just want to fix it, as a spare. Never leave my bike out overnight or in suspect places.

is it possible to buy replacement part?

if its welded poperly, there no reason why it couldnt be strong enough. thats the whole point of welding, its strong. the ends of the bar need to be chamfered so that full depth penetration can be achieved. and yes, i know that sounds rude.

It'll be high carbon steel and will be brittle after welding. Don't bother.
For the £10 it will cost at a Fab shop you could have bought a cheap lock that will be stronger than your fixed lock. Mini Kryps are like £25 new online anyway aren't they?
To do it right will involve pre/post heat treatment and low hydrogen electrodes or wire. This will cost more than it's worth for sure.

Yes. I think I am going to hold onto it. My christmas present to myself is some basic welding kit for such experiments. In the means if anyone is welding bikes I would love some tuition advice. I dont have a lot of money but am wise in the ways of hub gears and dutch bikes and cargo bikes.
Thanks for the help folks.

Ha ha, not much anymore and a little bit less each day... I used to hold AS1796 and ASME IX codes for tig and stick on pipe years ago when I was a Boilermaker but I doubt I could pass them again now. I have since found more fun things to do with my days, or at least less boring. Maybe I should start making frames 'Gav Spackson™' made from cheese....

That would be cool. But it's not urgent. Thanks. lets meet up anyway and have mulled wine/cider!
Yo yo yo!
I was working too hard with a big fat hangover last Saturday and lost my Kryptonite mini d-lock key forcing me to grind it off. However this morning the key appeared magically as I half expected it may and so I would like to re-join the lock sections if possible.
Please contact me if you can help me out.
