    To obtain the correct chain line (when the hub has been re-spaced), and assuming that the wheel is dished correctly, will not be as strong as a 130mm hub with a freeHUB, as you can adjust the chainline from that with moving spacers up and down, where as you are restricted more so (the chainline) with a SS screw on freewheel.

    Probably doesnt read quite right, but come over for a coffee and i will draw lots of shitty pictures to describe it.

    You are precisely wrong. Converting a freehub to singlespeed doesn't, indeed cannot, change the dishing, so it remains as weak as a normal geared hub. Flipping the one long spacer on Campag threaded freewheel hubs to the other side gives a close approximation of a good singlespeed chainline and results in an almost dishless build, i.e. with a much improved bracing angle on the drive side, better tension balance from side to side etc.

  • the distance between the flanges will be less than a dedicated fixed so even when re-dished correctly to sort out spacing and chainline, the build will only be at least as strong as when dished over in original configeration. TBH though unless your getting off the ground for funs or enjoy smacking potholes i don't see the issue.

    Wheel dish is fine. How far apart are track flanges?

    (Doing this required a new axle and nuts, but its not difficult.)

  • This is weird, I was considering doing exactly this (re-spacing a geared high flange to single). The hub has been built with a really short axle... its less than 120mm, had a compact 5 speed on it. Who should I ask to sort it? Who's the hub Don Gargon?!

  • Skully, are they Campag hubs? And what dropout width are they going into?

    If they're like these, you need to get lucky finding a track axle and nuts, (I didn't), or spend big money with Nigel at Campyoldy. Spacers to suit can be had from Velosolo.

    Dibs if you need a bloke with cone spanners. Who's Don Gargon?
